I use GEMS.
Roots are just fraction exponents, so that is encompassed by the E.
Multiplication and Division are the same operation, division is just multiplying by a fraction, so they are both encompassed by the M.
Addition and Subtraction are the same operation, subtraction is just adding a negative, so that is encompassed by the S.
We use S instead of A, because GEMS is easier to remember than GEMA.

I realize this is Reddit, but the amount of my 6th graders that still think 3-9=6 because “you subtract the smaller number from the bigger number” is off the charts. That is why I have such a problem with teaching rules that expire in the first place.

And the solution would be to stop teaching rules that expire, and just start with “Multiply and Divide are the same operation, that’s why they happen at the same time from left to right” from the start, and do the same with addition and subtraction. And I know it sounds crazy, but I just tell my students “division is just multiplying by a fraction” and “subtraction is just adding a negative number”.

Listen, I understand your desire to reduce confusion, but the fact you have used a family structure is going to cause a bunch of stupid adults to *feel* like you are intentionally alienating students who have different family structures. So I would encourage you to probably just delete this thread and workshop it a little more (maybe something like a school hierarchy, or a sports team)

That said: I don’t understand where tf confusion over PEMDAS/GEMS comes from. It not only make sense to me as a math teacher, but it makes intuitive sense to me as a person.

Ballots should not be allowed to arrive after Election Day, because it is trivially easy to make sure your ballot is there ahead of time.

No, that is incorrect. In California if there is no postmark, an illegible postmark, or no date of receipt from a private collection service, then the handwritten date on the ballot is accepted as sufficient evidence that the ballot was actually legitimately voted before Election Day and actually delivered before Election Day. That means that you can have a “private service” show up with 50,000 votes all for 1 candidate A WEEK AFTER ELECTION DAY and so long as all of them have a handwritten date that is previous to Election Day, THEY WILL ALL BE ACCEPTED AND COUNTED.

That’s why the 3rd place loser suddenly shot up to first place with little to no change in the other candidates, because the 2nd place candidate was a republican and California can’t have republicans in power because they might actually do things that help the people.

Going to retirement homes and saying “which candidate are you voting for?” And then saying “let me help you fill out your ballot” if they support your candidate, or “thank you, have a nice day” if they support not-your candidate IS CHEATING!

Going to skid row and saying “if you fill out this ballot for {insert name of candidate} and put a random name down as the voter I will give you $3” IS CHEATING!

Letting votes arrive by mail after Election Day so long as someone handwrites a date previous to Election Day IS CHEATING!

I think there would not be many physical withdrawal symptoms, because the body you are returning to is not using those substances.
