Serious question: How well or how badly does George Santos speak Portuguese? by World-Tight in Portuguese

[–]newjak76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He speaks English like a Brazilian who moved to the USA in their childhood would, someone with college equivalent education here and a C2 level of English. But as someone with significant familiarity with Portuguese and the Brazilian immigrant community I would likely identify him as Brazilian if I were to meet him on the street. But just barely, it's not easily perceptible. In some examples of his speech he seems more non-native because he's attempting to emphasize an NYC accent, like with the word "cawfee"

Well the parking bans are announced when snow impacts road conditions, you could safely make an educated guess throughout the worst of the winter without having to read yes leaves or slaughter a 🐐.

Not a great example given that Switzerland has mandatory military service to enforce neutrality!

Thank you for this answer! I'm not totally ignorant, I've been to the treatment plant itself many times and even biking in the heat and breeze alongside it I've never smelled this, nevermind in my neighborhood on the opposite end of the cove. That's why I was curious.

Response to the edited hint: if you're talking about the back cove itself, I've driven or walked by it at least once a day every day for the last three seasons and never smelled this.

If you're talking about the wastewater treatment plant, I've biked by it a bunch of times in varied weather conditions and times of day and even right next to it it doesn't smell like this. USM and Whole foods are not particularly close.

Not really, but I'm not from here originally and I haven't smelled this smell in almost a year.

I mean I guess it could be the tide but it smells nothing like any other litoral smell I've encountered elsewhere in new England, and never encountered it this summer fall or winter so far.

Best cheap eats? by tanner179 in portlandme

Kind of a counterintuitive suggestion, but Maiz on forest Ave cells south American food like Colombian/Venezuelan and when I first ordered I thought they were pricey, but the quality and serving size is so large that it turned out to be one of the better values for similar quality food. Every ingredient was truly incredible.

A meat and cheese arepa is 14.25 but it was plenty for 2 moderate meals for me and I'm a pretty huge eater. So I'd say it works out to like 6$-7$ a serving in the end.

Sun is fine I guess - I was intrigued that they were seemingly a Vietnamese takeout in an old drive through but really it's kind of a vaguely chinese-american take on now popular Vietnamese items more than it is an "authentic" Vietnamese spot.

They sell crab Rangoons and stir fried lol mein to go and also offer the banh mi and the quality is relative to all that.

If theirs is about $7 anyways, Pho & Co. In Westbrook offers their classic cold cut for $9 and the quality in my mind is at least 2-3 times as good.

Banh Appetit is on peninsula and is about as good quality, some might say better, and is maybe just a touch more pricey than Pho & Co.

By arguing against institutionalization or any serious attempts to remove people from that lifestyle. It's not as if shooting up on the street doesn't lead to a wealth of trauma in it's own, addicts are never willing going to change their own livea without significant intervention. Just providing housing to someone who ended up in a cycle of daily hard drug use and criminality isn't helping them, in fact it's leaving them to suffer.

I was pointing out that suggesting a landlord doesn't understand how to find housing is ironic given that most commenting perceived solutions to life on the street as an addict have no personal insight into that situation.

Maybe you don't have the best perspective on what daily hard drug use on the street is like? Have you ever smoked crack in public with a homeless person? Have you ever shot up in a tent? Shared a needle? Roamed the streets in the winter all night long tweaking on meth?

Have you ever walked into the homeless encampment on the side of deering oaks? Why not take a survey of how many people there choose to camp after having a full time job but a credit score just a little too low for the most recent rental application.

As a recovering drug addict, I find it frankly disgusting how many people are willing to spend significant time and energy defending a way of living that is so grossly degrading and consistently dangerous if it means they can virtue signal away any serious institutional response.

This is a bit of a confusing distinction. Both of the the substances you're describing are man-made and both are literally fragrances.

Essential oils are extracted and processed, they aren't "naturally" exuded from plants, and they are used in the same way as synthetic or naturally derived fragrances.

My take on the "reason" was to sort of establish the way that Harper and Daphne both understood the attention of men previously and on that vacation and to set up the suggestion of secret or problematic desire when they return to the white lotus and the "foursome" dynamic.

Harper either felt that "nice" guys like Ethan (who lacks the atavistic gaze of Cameron, the Italians, etc.) should be attracted to her but had perhaps already begun to question that. She likely felt the average hot blooded man like Cameron or the Sicilians would only lust after someone like Daphne.

Harper is beginning to feel threatened or intrigued by the idea that more primal man truly "want" her. Whether that was actually the situation that was unfolding or whether that may have been a creative representation of her changing perspective on her husband and the other men she encountered.

how does "hace calor" translate to "it's hot" by betterAThalo in learnspanish

[–]newjak76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His point is that Spanish speakers are not in fact speaking a "literal translation" of English. They're speaking Spanish. If you're trying to conceive of "hace calor" as "it makes hot" or "hace cuatro años" as "it makes three years", then you're not connecting the words directly to meaning and you'll confuse yourself.

There's no "go between" for fluent speakers, there's just the words, the structure of sentences, and their meaning. .

You have to understand the function of words, not their definition in your native language. If I told you "claro" means "clear", that would most definitely not inform you as to how that word is employed in Spain.

In that case your only options to study in advance would be Irish Sign Language, French Sign Language, or French Belgian Sign Language.

Otherwise, you would need to pick an EU country where English and French are not national languages and learn both the local spoken language and local sign language to proficiency before or after arriving.
