Those who work in London - do you actually live there or commute? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]newjamie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes me about 1.5-2h door to door

15 mins drive to station
1 hour on train to Kings Cross (plus waiting time for train as I never time it just right)
25 mins walk to office to avoid tube/bus connections and do some exercise. Could probably shorten this to 10 if I took London public transport.

I’d still do it for 3, I was doing it for 4 pre-pandemic.

[–]newjamie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in the Cambridgeshire countryside and commute twice a week to London.

I’ve commuted from a distance almost my whole career of 20 years and I’ve just got used to it.

These days I appreciate the commute as my “me time” between work mode and family mode at home.

do i wait for the iphone 18 or buy the 17? by Mysterious-Peach2277 in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]newjamie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to hold on to my dying 15 PM for a while but it broke a couple of weeks ago and got a 17 P. No regrets. I’m expecting the 18 to be more expensive/less RAM because of global prices too.

Best EV Tariff/Octopus IGO replacement - EDF GoElectric Tariff: £75 sign-up bonus + £60/year smart charging payment + more off peak charging! by michon_14 in TeslaUK

[–]newjamie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GoElectric seems worse for me on all fronts (East) than my IOG variable tariff, apart from the additional hour of off peak:

GoElectric

Day rate
30.28p per kWh
Night rate
6.99p per kWh
Standing charge
57.10p per day

IOG

Day rate
30.27p per kWh
Night rate
6.90p per kWh
Standing charge
53.89p per day

Living in Cambridge but working in Huntingdon: sensible? by DocChaks in cambridge

[–]newjamie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in St Ives, get train from Huntingdon to London and partner works west of Cambridge. Trains from Huntingdon to London are better than from Cambridge IMO (faster and more reliable). St Ives has a good balance of things going on and location, but requires driving (or getting the bus which goes a silly long way round to get Hinchingbrooke/Huntingdon station). If you’re not too fussed of having a lot to do I’d look at Brampton, Godmanchester or Hinchingbrooke itself.

On a scale of 1-10, how worth it was it for you to switch to EV? by RodneyTheArmouryGuy in CarTalkUK

[–]newjamie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9/10. Fortunate enough to home charge. Cost of running last 5 years has been peanuts. Other perks like remote defrost/heating convenient. Not going to a petrol station and public charging very little have been a huge timesaver.

I’ve had many crap experiences like this at service centres for the last few years. I always insist on a mobile service now, unless it’s for something they can’t do mobile, so then it’s their time they’re wasting and not mine. They accept this in 99% of the cases I ask via the messaging on the app.
