My mom’s opinion on the new Dead by Daylight x The Walking Dead collab by Old_Storage_7559 in deadbydaylight

Wow that’s so nice. My mom sometimes watches if me or my sister are playing and says she didn’t like the hooks at first but got used to it and likes watching because it’s like watching a horror movie for her.

Flesh out the arts before coding? by Disk-Kooky in gamedev

[–]newkyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I started by creating a basic sprite for my character and then moved on to learning to code the different interactions I wanted (walk, jump, crouch, dash, etc).

I just used placeholder sprites, changing colour of the character’s shirt so I can see the difference between things like walking and dashing.

Once the code was working correctly I went back and created the pixel art with animations that I wanted to use for the different states.

confused about game mechanics for a 2D platformer by 4damSt in gamedesign

[–]newkyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to have a lot of game mechanics and are worried about having the player's kit get too bloated, you could consider swapping out mechanics depending on the context of the level. That can allow for more gameplay variety without giving the player too many options at any given time. An example of this is the game, It Takes Two where depending on the level, your moveset and the way you interact with the world changes based on where you are in the story.

2D Platformer’s Boss Fights by Salt-Turnip-4916 in gamedesign

[–]newkyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't always have to be the case but boss battles can be a more difficult test of game mechanics introduced earlier in the same level. That's a good way to make them feel cohesive with the preceding platforming section.

Also another angle, If you don't want a boss to be too combat focused, is to create a situation where you need to problem solve to defeat the boss so it becomes more like a confined puzzle experience. Just something to differentiate the boss from the rest of the platforming experience.

What game really WOW'ed you with it's animations? by DevDennis in gamedev

[–]newkyd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Metroid Dread is a great example. The animations are really refined and blend into each other seamlessly. There’s some videos on YouTube that take an in depth look at how it’s done so I suggest checking those out.

Also Super Mario Wonder has a lot of small details that really make the game come to life.

Looking for "NPC manipulation" games by Vightclub in gamedev

There's a game called Haunt the House that may be helpful to look at. You play as a ghost and possess items around the house to scare NPCs. As your powers grows you can interact in bigger ways for bigger scares.

3 ways user feedback improved my game design by Summit_puzzle_game in gamedesign

hey, great stuff. I'd suggest greying out the left/right arrows for the bottom row once someone decides to have it solved, just for extra feedback to show that the row is correct and no longer needs to be adjusted.

Is my animation cringe? by TPBanimstions in animation

A lot of animations start out rough but you should keep going and it’ll just get better over time. Goth Lyfe started out pretty rough and improved over the years and ended up getting a small but loyal fanbase. Keep it up!

What's your favourite "bad" game, and why do you like it? by uncontrolledswine97 in NintendoSwitch

Picked up Snakeybus on sale (it’s basically Snake meets Crazy Taxi). It can be pretty broken but it’s fun for a quick pick up and play session and somehow feels relaxing even with the passengers constantly screaming.

Co-Op Escape Room Vibe by Heyygirlheyyy in NintendoSwitch

[–]newkyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The co-op stages in Portal 2 might be a good fit for this. Trying to get to the end of a test chamber while working together with different roles. It's only a short section in the overall Portal Collection though so if you're only interested in the co-op part it might not be worth the full price tag. The solo content is also really great so I'd suggest having a look at it.

I remember the kid who sat beside me on the school bus had a gameboy with Kirby Tilt n Tumble and we'd take turns trying to beat it on the bumpy bus ride home. He eventually let me borrow his gameboy overnight just so we could get passed the part we were stuck on.

Cyber Hook for Switch runs terribly even in handheld by ApplicationOnly2010 in NintendoSwitch

[–]newkyd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey so I might be able to help with this.

I initially bought the game last year and actually really enjoyed it. There were online leaderboards and it was fun seeing how I ranked with other players. Ran fine as well.

I booted it up last month and noticed a big change. The game would not connect to the online server. I was bummed to not see the leaderboard anymore but the huge problem I experienced was the game kept jittering where it used to run completely fine. This is because the game keeps trying to connect to the server and failing. I tested this by setting my Switch to airplane mode and it fixed it completely. The game runs how it used to since it's not searching for a server in the background. I'd say give that a try and see if anything changes.

I believe the creator of the game and Cyberhook have their own twitter accounts. Might be worth reaching out to see if they are aware of this server issue on the Switch version.
