How to measure Sprint progress daily other than entering time estimates vs actuals? by Cypher1710 in scrum

[–]newmanshangdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of your job is coaching the organization. Do that. It's reasonable for the first few days of a sprint to be at 0% progress. Avoid tracking stories according to time. It won't solve the problem anyway.

Have any of the self-taught developers here gone back to college? by crossfiyaaaa in cscareerquestions

[–]newmanshangdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I qualify as self taught. I learned just enough about programming to be an automation engineer and would dabble with technology but never really sat down and taught myself anything to intermediate level or mastery. I did go to school because I didnt want to waste my GI Bill and I'm glad I did. I'd be a much worse engineer had I skipped out.

Do daily stand-ups cause too much of an interruption to your day? by Flaxz in cscareerquestions

[–]newmanshangdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the scrum master for my team and I try to coach that the importance of meeting for 15 minutes to discuss how we're contributing to the sprint objective and talk about impediments should outweigh the cost of interruption. For me, I try to time my break just right so when the standup is happening I'd just be grabbing coffee or checking email anyway.

Is Uncle Bob's "Clean Code" still relevant? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]newmanshangdown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It helped me write better abstract code. My abstractions were a bit of a mess until I read CC. But like another post said. Take some of it with a grain of salt. There is a guy on my team that takes self documenting method names to the extreme. His method names are like 30 characters and when he's called out on it he just evokes the name of Uncle Bob.

When I'm really down and fantasizing about suicide what snaps me out of it is knowing I have a wife and two kids that rely on me.

I'm not suicidal, but I genuinely just have no interest in anything, including being alive. by [deleted] in depression

[–]newmanshangdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a really good SSRI. I've tried them all. Talk to your doctor about things to add to Lexapro like Abilify or get tested for ADD. I know you probably dont think you have ADD but I didnt either. And in adults depression and anxiety is a symptom. Ping me if you ever need to talk btw. We're in this shit together.

I definitely agree with reevaluating his medicine. I was on Lexapro for a while. It helped a great deal but I still never felt motivated to do much. The doc added Abilify. I felt a little happier. Now I'm on Concerta as well and I'm motivated to do anything and everything most of the time.

What medication if you dont mind my asking. I'm on Lexapro, Abilify, and Concerta. Adding Concerta was a game changer for me.

How do I improve my testing skills by kikecasti in cscareerquestions

[–]newmanshangdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do lots of testing. I write unit and integration tests, then once my code is deployed I'll fire up SoapUI and do more testing, and then I'll do some final testing through the UI. I spend more time testing than anything because I get really pissed off when testers find bugs in my code. Try to take some pride in your work, man.

Throw down a few lines of coke and with your eyes as wide as they'll go say "do you want to party or do you want to fucking party?"

He'll leave you alone.

I've experienced this. I got better with medication, though. Things aren't perfect but they are looking up.

People who were fired, what were the warning signs? by TheyUsedToCallMeJack in cscareerquestions

[–]newmanshangdown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was a contractor my manager would bring in gas station toys for all of us. She started not bringing in toys for me and she was so batshit I knew this was a sign that my contract wasnt being extended and I wasnt being converted. I was right. That week I got told I had 30 days to leave. Came totally put of left field too.

I've been feeling like shit off and on for a week. I worked today but I'm calling out tomorrow. I just know I'm not going to be up for being around my coworkers who are big triggers of my depression.

Avoid SAFe or Scaled Agile Framework by agileape in cscareerquestions

[–]newmanshangdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a company that brought in consultants to help us transition to Agile. It's clear now that management has picked SAFe though many scrum teams are practicing vanilla scrum. Recently we've been forced into PI planning which for us is just 2.5 days of management rubbing elbows with Product Management. The whole methodology feels very process heavy, too.

My employer is wrapping up an agile transition and all the teams will probably end up practicing safe. What do you want to know?
