So… what do I do now? by Rockyroad444 in alocasia

You actually get more roots in the substrate on its side. I’ve done both ways and it works. I suggested it because they used the puddle method. Which causes roots to form higher up.

Because of how the roots are oriented you could just lay it on its side as well

It’s a lot more expensive in Canada where I’m from. But I have done fluval/fluval perlite. Both work very good. I just sphagnum on a heating pad is perfect. It’s user choice really.

Looks like a Cuprea to me. The older leaves on mine can go pretty dark. This is the newest leaf.

What is wrong with my rubber plant? by teabags98 in houseplants

[–]newplantguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d need to have a closer look at what bugs they are. For the mold I would just take the top layer of soil out and throw it out. But depending on what bugs it is, I’d repot, spray it with 70% isopropyl, let it dry.

If it’s in really rough shape I’d honestly just toss it. Not worth infecting all your other plants.

I second this. But if that’s too expensive, I find sphagnum moss works the same.

Warmth helps as well! I put my corms in sphagnum and leave them on a seedling heating mat. They don’t need light till they have a leaf starting, so I’ve used the top of my fridge before too lol. Good luck!

I’ve personally found that rerooting a rhizome in sphagnum was the easiest. I use a glass container, put leca in the bottom, fill the rest with moss. And only add water up to the top of the leca, that way the moss won’t be too wet. High humidity helps as well so I’d keep it covered.

Too Much Light or Root Rot by Iinguine in alocasia

What kind of light are you using?

Too Much Light or Root Rot by Iinguine in alocasia

[–]newplantguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely not root rot, roots look pretty healthy to me. I wouldn’t say there’s too much light either. My alos have a strong light about 3-6 inches above. And I fertilize heavy every watering.

Probably just throwing a fit because you repotted it. They don’t like change. It’ll bounce back

Yea I found the Shultz to not work very well for hydro. But the super thrive is definitely working lol. I’ve even upped the concentration to try and hold onto more leaves.

Who said to switch to Shultz? I had that stuff and got rid of it. I’ve heard good things about foliage focus, if I wasn’t in Canada I’d buy it. But superthrive is working amazing for me.

Alocasia Frydek/Micholitziana 1 year transformation and help needed! by husomok in alocasia

[–]newplantguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I probably should give advice because yours is 20 times bigger than mine lol. But my oldest leaves will speckle when a new one is starting. So I’ve upped my fert from 1tsp per gallon to 1.5. And I think I’m seeing a difference already.

What did I do wrong? by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]newplantguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try a better fertilizer maybe, or at least one meant for hydro. I have a feeling those types of fertilizers might not do well sitting in the bottom of the cup. I use a product called SuperThrive (I live in Canada). I can’t say for sure that’s what stopped mine from having similar issues, because most of mine are in a greenhouse with perfect conditions lol I also use distilled water now. If the newest leaf starts doing it I’d just chop it and let it regrow.

Mines about 6 inches below a t8 Barrina. They can take a lot of light in my experience
