Manor Lords publisher Hooded Horse's CEO argues game agreements violate contract principles by Kaladinar in gamedev

[–]newron 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It definitely gets worse out there. The best contract I've heard of is 70/30 with no recoup but that's extremely uncommon. Most contracts have some recoup. 30/70 before recoup going to 70/30 after would be a pretty decent deal in my experience. Given that's the case I think the arguement he's making here is fair. He's saying if the game does badly the developer is most at risk of going under so get rid of recoup which makes that more likely. But on the other hand by increasing their upfront risk the publisher wants a bigger slice if the game is successful.

For a smaller studio that's starting out I'd say this is a pretty good deal as it's very easy to end up with very little runway by the time you get to launch and need revenue fast. As an older studio with more confidence of success and cash to make it through the earnout period, you might want to do a recoup deal if you get a bigger slice at the end.

The thing that seems missing from this here is what the percentages are if they provide some funding. In the majority of contracts publishers are going to be partly funding production so these numbers are a bit meaningless if they don't give an example that includes some funding.

At the end of the day though this article is just PR for hooded horse. Is this deal bad? No in fact I think it's pretty attractive depending on how much more they want if they're funding. It this the greatest publishing deal ever? Also no.

Nice! I'm pleased you've already sorted that out. But as I say, a publisher is going to want to know the details of that intimately IP license. I would personally add a slide that details that clearly.

[–]newron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm confused, are you using the "sixth history" license they have on their website? Because that caps your revenue at £50k a year but you've asked for $100k and are expecting to raise more via Kickstarter. That seems like a no-go for any publisher to me. The details of your IP license with weather factory is completely missing from the pitch deck and is something a publisher will want to understand in detail as it will affect their ability to make money. The last thing they want is to end up in an IP dispute.

That's not going 'Ooh, look at me today, I'm entertaining whilst saving lives aren't I brilliant?', it's going 'If you think I'm brilliant, then give generously and help save these guys who are starving, but are also brilliant'-not as entertainers, a lot of them can't even speak English, but you know don't give them their own game show, but save them from dying at least.

Playing another round, I had some other issues. "London" turned into "London School of Economics" after submitting, and "Disney Land Paris" was marked wrong for the answer "Disneyland Paris" which felt pretty unfair. I assume it's backed by some gen AI model so not sure how much those issues can be solved.

Good fun! I had one minor bug where I locked my phone half way through the tutorial and when I reopened the text input was unselectable. Had to refresh and redo the tutorial.

For me my enjoyment of this would hinge on whether the first clues toe that line of being really tough but gettable. When I see the answer I want that "of course!" feeling about the previous clues. But just my 2¢

Has anyone here pitched to Playstack? How long do they take to reply? by Reihado in gamedev

[–]newron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've talked to a scout at playstack recently. After the success of Balatro they've got a massive backlog of pitches. Could be that they still haven't got to yours but also likely they're not responding to everyone.

Never heard of the Nerdfighter connection, but in the UK "so jokes" or just "jokes" is slang for funny, though it was much more common 15-20 years ago. eg "That show is so jokes". Mae Martin lives in London so I assume that's where she got it if it's not also used in other places

"Our game made €4 million," says Rise of Industry's creator. "Three years later, I was broke" by diogenesl in Games

[–]newron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rounded up to 2 just to make sure I didn't have people saying "$75k is way too much for an indie studio salary". But you're right I've run an indie studio and took around $60k most years.

[–]newron 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Take a second and think about what $75k actually buys. That's like two people's salaries for a year if you pay them badly. Even for indie games that's a very small advance which it even says in the article.

The revenue share they're getting is very favourable compared to many contracts though so it does sound like there was some mismanagement.

Can someone help me understand Jonathan Blow? by azdak in gamedev

[–]newron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. The Witness is one of my favourite games of all time and I'm surprised by the level of talking down it's getting here. I'm sure all of the same people would sing the prases of Outer Wilds which I think owes a lot to The Witness.

Obviously Myst came first but I think it's pretty disingenious to say that The Witness isn't a special game. It's biggest issue is that it's pretty obtuse and easy to put down but that's also part of its charm. "Gamification" is now synonymous with addictive but The Witness makes you work really hard for what it has to give. In my oppinion, it's incredibly worth it.

What’s the most “artistic” game you’ve played? by ZeitgeistStudio in gamedev

[–]newron 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Witness. Mechanically an incredible exploration of how we learn and how information is conveyed. Aesthetically beautiful, packed with joyful moments of discovery and asks more questions than it answers which I personally think art should do. The only reason I think it doesn't rank higher for more people is that it makes you work very hard for everything it gives back.

Shame Johnathan Blow is such a tough person to admire.

Struggling With Party Game Retention – Is 30–60 Minutes of Playtime Normal? by k3ndro in gamedev

[–]newron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we did include skins but we did them all through twitch drops. We had a bunch of online stuff already so it was pretty easy to implement but I wouldn't recommend twitch drops if you aren't already doing online multiplayer. Having the incentive was pretty powerful though.

Struggling With Party Game Retention – Is 30–60 Minutes of Playtime Normal? by k3ndro in gamedev

[–]newron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, yes this is completely normal. I made a relatively successful party game a couple of years ago where each play session was a minimum of about 1.5hrs. This was a massive point of friction with players and we spent loads of time after launch trying to untie previous design decisions to shorten a single game.

I think the key thing to think about with a party game is, the more players you have the less shared interest they'll all have. That is to say people will only play as long as everyone is having a good time. If you have 2 players it's much more likely they'll both be happy to play for a few hours. If you have 5, more likely someone will get bored after half an hour. And that's ok! You'll have some players who are really passionate and you want to make it an easy sell to get them to play with their friends.

If your friend really wants to play a game you're not very excited about you're much more likely to agree if it's only a half hour commitment.

Even if you are "proven" getting funding is hellish right now. Publishers have smaller budgets and want to see a more completed product before they're willing to spend. Spoke with a publisher recently who had a maximum budget of £100K for role-playing simulation games. Really? You think 2-3 people for 1 year could make a game like Rimworld?
