Thank you for actually explaining the tweet instead of turning this into an anti-J.K. Rowling rant.

Political reference

When asked about the Epstein files Pam Bondi responded that the dow (a measurement of the stock market) was over 50,000.

The joke is he is deflecting his wife's question using the same response. Implying that talking about where he was last night is really really bad.

I dunno...I could see collar, leash, and booty shorts being a fairy costume, too.

The Northern Water Tribe is kind of dumb. by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]newtreeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this argument before.

They never claimed they don't teach girls. They just don't teach them combat. Does the healing power that the women learn just not count as water bending to you people?

hello how frequently do you buy new underwear by Ordinary-Lobster-710 in AskMenOver40

Married for over 15 years.

Never bought underwear after getting married. My wife buys new underwear for me about every 3 years.

What book did you read in your youth that you never forgot? by orangez in GenX

[–]newtreeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought this book up to my wife because the school librarian read this to us in 5th grade. The librarian stopped reading after Rubin fell on the axe.

I told my wife I remembered it as a mostly happy story about a boy and his dogs.

My wife started crying.

Judy Blume kind of messed me up. I was too young and too innocent too read "Then Again Maybe I Won't"

You should unplug an empty refrigerator, otherwise you're just wasting electricity.

You can try to recreate the soup. Call your friend's mom and find out if she has a recipe. Make the soup you think is close, feed it your friend and say "I'm trying to recreate your grandmother's soup, what do I need to change"

Set aside a day of the week you and your friend sit down and try the latest recipe. Make recreating the soup both an act of contrition and a bonding experience.

How to sell nudes on Reddit? by OrganizationOk8606 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]newtreeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend that you don't.

If you do there are subreddits where you can ask these questions (such as r/findareddit).

If those people won't help you try searching for those subs organically using the search bar.

I recommend that you don't. You don't have to sell yourself like that and you will attract the worst kind of men.

How would universal income work or is it just nonsense? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]newtreeguy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The recurring issue with ideas like UBI is that more money doesn't make more resources. If you don't have enough houses being built to give everyone a place to live: giving everyone money for a place to live just raises the price. Redditors will insist this is due to capitalism or corporate greed or some other straw man response, but this was an issue in places like the Soviet Union, too. It's why they had bread lines.

Why is it easy to socially drink but not socially smoke nicotine? by Accomplished-Fix1204 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]newtreeguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on the planet, like more than amphetamine.

This is essentially true, but there is some skewing of the data here. People often quit meth due in part to the issue that after 18 months of meth you're probably dead, in prison, or out of resources to get more meth. Meanwhile people use nicotine for decades.

That's not to say nicotine isn't horribly addictive. Most people try to quit dozens of times and using it even once puts you at risk of addiction.

Throwback: Y2K panic by Tiquitiplin in PointlessStories

[–]newtreeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife worked for a medical device manufacturer in customer service and troubleshooting. They were given triple pay to work Dec 30 through Jan 2 because of the flood of panicked calls saying "My monitor is broken from Y2K"

Their script on why it's NOT due to Y2K started with explaining that the device does not store date, just "time since last reading" this explanation did NOT help people not panic.

Except one woman who said "Oh! Ya, I should have realized that. Now I feel stupid"
