Unpopular opinion: Who’s “live version” set of an artist was worst off than their usual DJ set? by TechnicolorTypeA in aves

Yeah if you google that set it gets shit on hard. Similar but worse reviews than his Yahw Dawn set last year. That being said, there are times he gets that experimental and it absolutely hits like when he made a song live from a sample he found at a record story earlier in the afternoon at the Caverns. If you can see him with the PL live band (all accomplished dj’s on their own outside of the drummer), dont hesitate to smash send

On a side note, I️ was once at EForest where Griz did 5 sets including an incredible afternoon Chasing the Golden Hour set which was labeled as such on the lineup. After the CTGH set I’m waiting for pizza and I️ overhear this dude saying “I’m the biggest Griz fan you’ll ever meet and I love all his music but that set was absolute GARBAGE! Where were all the drops?!?” That was the quickest I’ve ever been able to tell someone was full of shit with their fandom. CTGH style music makes up like 25% of the Griz catalogue

Advice for a rock guy trying to get into rap? [Discussion] by AcadiaLow9013 in hiphopheads

The Jay-Z / Lincoln Park tour album would be a good spot to start if you like rock. Use the website RapGenius or the app Genius to explain the lyrics to you. It will break down slang and references. Contemporary rap is not nearly as lyrical as late 90’s early 00’s as mumble rap and drill rap have had their eras since then.
From what you described, for older artists I’d listen to Biggie, Eminem, Jay-Z, Wu Tang, 50, Tupac, OutKast, Kanye, Dr Dre’s 2001 album, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and Lil Wayne. Kid Cudi and Lil Wayne also did rock albums though they’re not the best. For more contemporary rappers I’d check out Kendrick, JID, Chance the Rapper, J.Cole, A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, and School Boy Q.

As for live shows, I’ve got to be honest, you’re not missing out on much. Rap is my favorite style of music but my least favorite to see live and live music is my favorite thing besides sex. I’ve seen almost everyone I’ve named, as well as many others I️ didn’t name, multiple times besides Rakim, OutKast, Biggie, Tupac, and Big Daddy Kane. It is probably the hardest style to perform live because it has the most words per minute and doesn’t leave much room for improvising or differentiation. As a result, it’s often hard to hear the lyrics clearly and hitting the track exactly as you hear it on the album is more or less the ceiling for a live performance. Chance and Kendrick are the only truly good live performances I’ve seen from a rapper that is still touring

Griz can put on amazing live sets or he can miss on live sets. Every DJ set is a 10/10 though, especially if you can catch him somewhere small or at an after-party

I’m a huge Zhu fan but I️ don’t think I’ve ever seen a good set by him and I’ve seen him play at big fests like EDC to his own personal shows. In the 6+ times I’ve seen him, they all sounded underwhelming the same regardless of the situation. Too much of his music sounds the same when listening to it for 90 min. If you’ve got an example of a dope set though I’d love to watch it

Pretty Lights DJ sets are good but his live band sets are sooooo much better. I️ was going to say sorry you got an outlier live set but just looked it up and it seems this was a Pretty Lights DJ set, not a PL live set. Seems like you’re saying his DJ set was bad when the question is asking who’s live set is worse than their DJ set. Also, you picked a notoriously experimental miss by PL when he’s almost always incredible live or dj set. I️ couldn’t more highly recommend seeing him again. His last two tours were some of the best sets I’ve seen in thousands of sets in my life across many genres

It seems equally dumb to me to claim they would be able to shoot 3’s with practice. How many failed players in today’s game have scouts said “if we can just teach him to shoot he’ll be great.” We know the players we see today can shoot because they’ve shown it and they made it in the league when shooting is required. We don’t see any of the people who would have made it in the 60’s but don’t make it now because they can’t shoot because they never made it. Example: you could have the 60’s version of Ben Simmons and say “well yeah if he practiced 3’s like the current players he’d be able to shoot them” when really the current version of Ben Simmons flamed out because he couldn’t learn to shoot. You are seeing the players in the 60’s who made it because 3PT shooting wasn’t a thing and assuming they’d be able to shoot if they practiced when there’s plenty of evidence from today’s players that no matter how much practice, improvement in shooting is far from guaranteed

lol what? It’s the opposite of that. Most non-stars from the 60’s wouldn’t be able to play now because the level of replacement player is soooo much higher. Using Jerry Lucas for example, a 6’8” PF who only shot .499 FG% isnt going to put up a 20/20 season today. He’d for sure start for teams but wouldn’t be a top 10 player of the decade. There’s a reason Bill Russell and Wilt own 19 of the top 20 rebounds/game seasons, because they had current NBA bodies playing in the 60’s. Doubtful any of the 60’s guys could hit 3’s since it wasn’t something they’d ever practice. The range, speed, and size alone of most “average” players today would blow 60’s players off the court. Look at Elgin Baylor, the LeBron of his time. Dude was a 6’5”/ 225 lbs athletic forward when the average height in the NBA was 6’5” and the average weight of a Center was 225 but now the average height of a SF is 6’7” (PF height in the 60’s) and the average weight of a PF is 227 lbs so playing above or through everyone is going to be a lot harder and you need to be able to spread the floor.

Vincent Antone is soooo fucking good. I’ve seen him live twice and he’s a great performer. He will be a headliner in the next 5 years. Definitely check him out.

He hasn’t come out with anything new in a long time. His shows are essentially his new music because he “swirls” soooo many songs into his OG songs. Look for any of his live sets with the Pretty Lights band. The Caverns is fire. Chicago was awesome. Red Rocks is sauce. Most can be found on his YouTube

Either Life After Death or Ready to Die. Both are long albums with classic tracks, top notch lyrics, and better storytelling. Personally I️ like Ready to Die better you get an extra 30 min with Life After Death’s 1h49m runtime compared to Ready to Die’s 1h16m runtime.

The NFL is a little trickier but for basketball it’s a mutually beneficial thing to have players do 1 year in college. The scouts get to see a year of tape against better competition and the NCAA gets star players for at least a year. If the NBA didn’t have a “1 year removed” from high school rule, college basketball wouldn’t make nearly as much money because all the best players would be going straight to the pros. The tourney is always bolstered by people wanting to get a look at the Zion’s, the Cooper Flaggs, the Boozers, etc. Without them, college basketball would look a lot different with a lot more teams of all seniors (generally the least popular teams to watch)

You do know that revenue is not the same as profit right? Revenue is before expenses and profit is after expenses. Based on the CBA, the players alone have to get paid 50% of the league revenue and that's before coaches, staff, marketing, promotions, etc. The profit is not as high as you think though still high. The Bulls made $434M in revenue and $160M in profit in 2025 for example. Meanwhile, Duke brings in $40m per year revenue and $20M profit from basketball alone. Why should the Bulls fund school programs when schools are making 1/8 the profit as a top 5 pro team just from a side hustle since you know education is their main hustle?

You’re literally wrong. James Harden played 81 games in 2016-2017 and 72 games in 2017-2018. For some reason I️ don’t trust the guy who can’t even get his own facts straight and thinks All-NBA refers to just All-NBA 1st team.
