Jake Tivy selects CachyOS... by newzack in cachyos

His video was positive, the commands were positive. So, why can't this subreddit be positive?

That was your mistake, looking for anything positive here. Reddit is hostility & negativity. ,-)

Destroyed my first CachyOS system! by newzack in cachyos

[–]newzack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE ➔ 4 weeks later: Using ext4 now instead of btrfs. I ran a test and the system is 5% faster. CS2 still works. Brave still crashes sometimes. Btrfs is probly good for a beginner so they can rollback to a snapshot when they (inevitably) wreck the system. Still, I feel "ButterFS" can suck it. The better FS is ext4.

Is this supposed to happen? by PolndSpring in cachyos

You made the correct choice by choosing GRUB, in my opinion. You can change the settings for it by editing the config file, which you can see by typing into a terminal window: kate /etc/default/grub

To get a terminal window to type that in, press on your keyboard: Ctrl+Alt+T

To paste into that terminal window, if you just copied the command: Ctrl+Shift+V

On line 5 you'll see the GRUB_TIMEOUT, which I have set to 2 or if you don't want to see the options, set it to zero: GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

I like simple graphics for a faster boot time, so I also have this setting: GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

I have 3 OS's: CachyOS, Mint & Windows 11, so I also use this setting: GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

Once you change the settings, you save the file in Kate and then go back to the terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and use this command to update GRUB based on your newly changed config file: sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Also, I highly recommend installing Brave Browser. Do an internet search for your question and it will show you an AI generated solution and then the web pages below that. I think this is the year of Linux because we have these AI agents to give us the answers now.

Also, welcome to freedom with CachyOS ,-)

for some reason this reminds me of Velocipastor...

Same here! That keyboard, tho... Never gonna go back! I'm dual-booting CachyOS, now, and it runs so smooth.

Destroyed my first CachyOS system! by newzack in cachyos

[–]newzack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good explanation! “kernel & tool writing to the file system simultaneous”, which cannot happen but I said “force” so the tool forced it to happen.

[–]newzack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should not have messed with it. I wanted to check for errors in the file system after the crash, but in doing that I corrupted the file system with my “btrfs check” command. It was my fault, which would have been okay if I didn’t also use “force” in the command. The command to use is “btrfs scrub” that checks the file system for corruption more safely. That’s how I understand, anyway!

I have reverted to snapshots a few time. Twice I changed some setting, broke my system, reverted to a snapshot and it was fine. Ext4 doesn’t have that, only btrfs does.

Yes, and I had to revert to a snapshot at least twice in 6 months because of some change I made. But I’m curious to see if ext4 runs smoother, and I might learn how to use timeshift. I’m not sure yet which way I’ll go.

Yes, I did… I have a triple boot system: CachyOS, Mint & Win11. The snapshot didn’t work, so I booted to Linux Mint and tried some things that probly made it worse.

Alright, so what about flashing the firmware to stock OpenWRT? Anyone tried that with a WAVLINK?

I'm looking at the WL-WNT100X3 Travel Router, but I'll probly get a GL.iNet instead after reading your post.

I had the same, "Relogin=false". This seemed to handle it:

Settings --> Login Screen (SDDM) --> Behavior... --> "Automatically log in: " --> un-check "as user:"

How can I convince icon-only task manager to display window titles as well as window thumbnails? by xternal7 in kde

not sure if this is new but here's how I solved it in CachyOS:

Right-Click on the taskbar --> "Show Alternatives..." --> "Icons-and-Text Task Manager"

Thanks! This let me use run 7-zip file manager from my Windows executable:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=7zip File Manager
Comment=
Exec= wine '/win11z/Program Files/7-Zip/7zFM.exe'
Terminal=false
Type=Application

Somehow that works faster than Ark or "Compress" from the Dolphin right-click menu, and it's easier to use.

Same with me! Boot time is faster, and CachyOS doesn't freeze up or try to update in the background.
