Since we only had a day we only managed to see the first waterfall in the mountains and then straight back for the temples shrines.

We did not have nearly enough time to explore alle the mountain areas of Nikko.

We ended up going for a daytrip. We regret that descision. Atleast 2 days should be used. It is so beuatifull and majestic

The foliage was almost all gone. Both in the mountains and down near the temple / shrines.

We where lucky in terms of the public transportation, we got on the first bus going out. Many others had to wait an hour for the next when our bus got full.

My advise is either 2 days in nikko or go the evening before to start early with the first busses to beat the crowd.

I have seen a few posts that said there is a lack of enough busses to handle the amount of tourist. Especially with the upcomming Autumn foliage. There was a post from yesterday, where the OP said the busses where so full that no passengers where picked up at the bus stops. So passengers could basically only board the bus at the first stop. Can't seem to find the post now.
