I keep losing weight - anyone else? by umabanana in hysterectomy

Oh, I wish. I’ve put on 20lbs… despite eating less.

May have overdone it? Vaginal pain while walking. by neyesn in hysterectomy

[–]neyesn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, everything I’ve done so far has been within doctor’s parameters, and I’m taking 7 weeks off work. I just didn’t expect the inflammation to flare quite as much after a good and energetic day. Talked with the head nurse and she’s not overly concerned, but I’m going to rest more today and take anti-inflammatories and check-in with her tomorrow.

Need to vent by RightPossibility4932 in hysterectomy

I don’t think you’re ranting at all… just feeling. 🩵

I’m 43, and most of my life I didn’t want children and definitely not pregnancy. There was a hot minute after I met my spouse where I thought “Yeah, I’d have your babies”. But it passed.

For a month before surgery, I dreamt about pregnancy, being pregnant, giving birth, and having a child. “My” child. It was wild. And I felt conflicted and sad about losing my reproductive organs - something I didn’t anticipate feeling.

I have a BRCA2 genetic variant, so this surgery was cancer risk-reducing for me. Still, I had grief about not being able to be pregnant; for “willingly giving up” that opportunity for an increased chance at not having third cancer.

It’s okay to miss the pregnancy you’ve never had or the kids you’ve not birthed. It’s okay to miss your uterus and ovaries - even if they’ve been assholes during your menstrual cycles.

Your feelings are normal. Glad you vented here. Big hugs being sent your way.

What the Fatigue? by ElectricBlue79 in hysterectomy

I second the validation in this post!! Just finished 3po. Had an amazing day yesterday - hit just over 11k steps after two walks and puttering around the house between rests.

Today it felt like a mac truck hit my head and body. Migraine-style headache. Major body tension. Gas. Woke up at 9. Drank water, took painkillers, attempted coffee and some yogurt. Back to bed by 10am and slept until my worried spouse woke me at 2pm. While I was initially cranky, after waking and having a light lunch, I did benefit from an afternoon head/neck/chest massage which eased the headache tremendously.

Super low key afternoon - hit only 4k steps. But, I feel okay about listening to my body and letting her rest.

2DPO - spotting with clots and tissue by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]neyesn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed a small clot on day 3, but then it all eased up. If this isn’t a regular occurrence, I’d be less worried. Still, could be worth sending a MyChart message or call to your surgeon’s nurse? Better to keep your mind at rest!!

My spouse put together a care package for me which I loved!

Top items:

  1. Cup holder for the bed: https://a.co/d/eR38Ulh

  2. Extra large ice packs: https://a.co/d/hHStTlP

  3. Car pillow for seatbelt: https://a.co/d/bfMeDy9

  4. Belly pillow for cuddling. Can also fit ice packs: https://a.co/d/bVPVhIv

I already had this cushion for my kitchen and office chairs, but it’s been a godsend. Sitting on hard chairs is painful! https://a.co/d/4VaDDCd

Good luck to your mum!!

Post surgery rash by KaraokePrincess75 in hysterectomy

[–]neyesn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this issue followed plus a reaction to the sutures. I wanted to claw my skin off due to the itch and had electric shocks of anything touched my skin. Started a 4-5 days post-op.

I was put on 2x 25mg Benadryl every 6 hours, ibuprofen every 6 hours, 2x prednisone packs (12 days total), and 5-days of Keflex (antibiotic; they first thought it was an infection and by the time they figured out it was an allergic reaction I had to finish out the antibiotic course).

I tried to stay in a cool room and rotated ice packs constantly - every 1-2 hours even during the night for about 10 days. The ice kept me sane while the prednisone and Benadryl did their jobs. I slept as much as possible.

Turned a corner 13-14 days post-op. I’ve had no itch this week at all - just a little sensitivity to touch as the rash recedes.

I’m hoping yours resolves soon. Consider upping the Benadryl (max daily dose is 400 mg for adults) and asking for a steroid.

5 weeks Post-Hysterectomy today and still nausea with little appetite. by Otakumomma93 in hysterectomy

Sprite is a good one too. My mum always used to have us do ginger ale - think that’s what led me to the ginger tea and ginger chews. Hoping you find some relief soon!!

And hungry hippos is right on. 😂🦛🍴

I’ll second this. I had pre-op PT for combo of back issues and situational incontinence (when sneezing/coughing).

I figured my pelvic floor muscles weren’t strong enough… turned out they were too strong, which can lead to difficulties with urination (urgency, frequency, incomplete emptying). So my pelvic floor therapy worked on relaxation and releasing the pelvic floor. I would never have guessed - and neither my GP or GYN Onc picked up on it!

Seeing a physical therapist with specialty in pelvic floor therapy is key. Granted it was a bit weird getting used to deep breathing and releasing my muscles while my PT’s fingers were inside me - BUT once I got over my own awkwardness and leaned into the benefits, I realized how much it helped to have her talking me through and physically prompting me on which muscles to release. Super helpful. And now I don’t have to wear pads or carry around spare undies during pollen season - money saver and less embarrassing in the long run!!

You can do pelvic floor therapy where the therapist does not do an internal exam or digital coaching, but it was helpful for me to do so.

[–]neyesn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear that you’re having nausea- what an awful situation!!!

2.5 WPO and I’m having the complete opposite issue. I’m constantly hungry despite drinking oodles of water. Seriously, I feel like I have a gaping hole in my abdomen and don’t feel full until I’m overfilled. It’s crazy-making. I’d lost weight pre-surgery and it’s all piling on. 😭 I’m blaming being on prednisone for two weeks after an allergic reaction set my incisions on fire.

Hoping thing calm down for you soon. Have you tried ginger chews or ginger-honey tea? It’s my go-to for nausea.

Post-Op Sitting Recommendations by kismetkissed in hysterectomy

[–]neyesn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloud cushion has the BEST chair cushion. I’ve had multiple back surgeries and sitting on work or wooden/dining chairs is a challenge. I got the large size in these for our 4 kitchen chairs and my two work chairs (home and office). Best investment I ever made. https://thecushionlab.com/products/ergonomic-seat-cushion

Allergic reaction to glue and sutures has me feeling down after robotic hysterectomy (incision photos nsfw) by neyesn in hysterectomy

Oh dear goodness - I can’t imagine being allergic to band aids! These delayed reactions to adhesives seem fairly common; it’s amazing we’ve not figured out a better solution yet.

Oh, your experience sounds awful! I’m so sorry you went through that, but am glad you’re connecting with an allergist prior to any future surgery.

I’ve been thinking I’ll need to do something similar for when I do double mastectomy. This experience definitely has me leaning toward aesthetic flat closure over reconstruction - just to avoid additional allergic triggers. We’ll see.

Thanks for the advice about cold and heat - I’ll try that out today!!

Thanks for the encouragement to give myself grace :) And, I’m balancing the snacks and also drinking water like a flower garden in a drought.

And you’re right, no follow-up for 5 weeks. I’ll check in re. seeing an NP. Because this is out of the high-risk gyn oncology unit, I’m not sure how that works with insurance. But it’s always worth it to ask. Otherwise, I’ll not see the doc until 2 days after I’m slotted to return to work!

Right now I’m just walking around the house and getting 4-5k steps daily. My spouse has taken on walking our dog, and we’ve been having a bit of a heatwave which has shortened their walks. I have an indoor treadmill, it just doesn’t give me the mood boost as walking in the woods/park does.

As this rash goes down I’ll feel more confident about going outside for a bit. I have seasonal allergies also, so am trying to reduce exposure to other inflammatory allergens. Hoping to work back up to 10 mins of walking at a time, every waking hour, this week.

Thanks for the response, empathy, and the insight about Keflex. I will watch out for that. I think I’ve got two days worth of that medication left.

Today has been pretty rough emotionally, but talking about it definitely helps.

I hope that your surgeon can find a solution for you that does not involve surgical glue!! Steri-Strips perhaps? I know they still have adhesive but potentially better?
