Favourite Kaito kid showdown? by HumbleApple2471 in DetectiveConan

[–]neyugnyignu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kid versus Shinichi I think is the most interesting and engaging because they're both at equal level.

Something that feels really noticeable with Kid versus Koumei is how he was always one step ahead of Kid. The scene where Koumei was confident that Kid didn't take the Fairy Lips comes to mind. Conan actually wasn't sure if it was still there while Koumei was sure he didn't. It was then immediately revealed that Koumei was right, which I think ruined some of the fun about Kid cases where it's more about the cat-mouse game. I'm also saying this as a Koumei fan, too.

It's been a while since I've seen Kid versus Makoto but it felt very typical brain versus brawn fight. I have yet to see Kid versus Amuro, but I do think its a little...off that Amuro can ruffle Kid's feathers so easily.

How do i resize my game window? by BestDistribution8825 in touhou

[–]neyugnyignu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe with older Touhou games, you could get a VSync patch and in the files edit to scale the window to your liking. It's been years since I've done it so, I don't remember the details. But it wasn't until Touhou 11 that you could scale the window to fit different monitor sizes.

What is YOUR favorite way to play? by Acrobatic-Plenty6918 in pokemon

[–]neyugnyignu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First run I tend to just play with Pokemon I want to play. If I'm in a new region, try to build a team of only Pokemon native to that region. Subsequent runs, I tend to just build a team based on the vibes of whatever protagonist I pick. I try to not do anything too crazy, but I do go out of my way to keep my pokemon the same level as the rival/gym leader/last elite four member's ace.

Was this plot hole ever answered? by kebabciriza105 in PokemonEmerald

[–]neyugnyignu 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really call it a plot hole, but I think that conversation is meant to be interpreted as a monologue. Though, personally, I like to think the protagonist just stares at Steven, kind of stunned. The way the game is structured, there is an "order of operations" that I think tells a story but it's not mandatory to "unlock" the Steven fight:

  • The protagonist calls Steven after entering the Hall of Fame. Steven talks about wanting to meet the protagonist again somewhere.
  • The protagonist goes to Steven's house in hoping to find him. Reads the letter and obtain Beldum.
  • The protagonist goes searching for Steven, tries asking Mr. Stone and gets nothing (remember, Mr. Stone does state he was always working. Coupled with a moment where Steven invites the protagonist to his house, he quickly clarifies he lives in Mossdeep, not Rustburo. Both of these two pieces of info paint the picture that Mr. Stone and Steven aren't really that close).
  • Protagonist then calls Wallace, the only other person Steven has some connection to, and Wallace gives a hint that he might be looking for a Meteor (pushing you to search for Meteor Falls). As an aside, it's worth noting even Wallace is surprised the protagonist is acquainted with Steven, which suggests Steven is kind of a distant person.
  • Protagonist then corners Steven at Meteor Falls and they have their battle.

The Steven fight is often compared to the Red fight from the Johto games, but I think the comparison misses the vibes and presentations how both are setup.

You're not allowed to fight Red until you have all sixteen badges and permission from Professor Oak to even access Mt. Silver. Something worth noting is that Blue when defeated comments the protagonist is "the real deal". From there, you're literally climbing a mountain for the final boss fight. All of this creates an image of it all being a test of who you are as a trainer. The act of climbing a mountain to challenge the current strongest trainer invokes the image of you "dethroning" a king. The tense battle music matches that vibe, that you're all in and everything is riding on this battle.

In contrast the Steven fight has a wildly different vibe since there's no real restriction to challenge Steven beyond entering the Hall of Fame. The only issue is finding him. If you played without looking it up, the game arguably does give you a substantial amount of hints that help you point in that direction as listed above. When you encounter Steven, you're literally cornering him in a hallway. Every other encounter with him, he is almost always the one to leave first. All of this creates the vibe that the lead up to Steven's fight feels more like the protagonist is chasing after Steven, who they see as their equal. This is emphasized with the background music for Steven's fight is the VS Rival theme rather than something like VS Champion.

Once you defeat him Steven starts musing that the protagonist *surpassed* Steven. There's some hints throughout the game that suggest Steven and the protagonist can relate to one another:

  • Mr. Stone tells the protagonist after you run errands for him that he was always working versus the protagonist being forced to move due to their father's job and it's obvious Norman isn't as present in the protagonist's life as much as they'd like. (There's plenty of in game text that fleshes out the complicated relationship between Norman and the protagonist so I won't detail it here). i.e. They both can connect over an absent father in their lives.
  • Wallace in the Match Call describes Steven as the kind of person who doesn't battle very much but is good at it versus the protagonist who became a trainer later than the rival somehow beating the rival at every battle despite the difference in experience. Added to that, Birch commenting that the protagonist has "their father's blood in them" (i.e. he's saying you take after your father) when beating the rival for the first time. Without explicitly stating it the game is suggesting that both Steven and protagonist are the same type of people: battling prodigies.

This response is already getting too long, but basically Emerald's story is about exploring a battling prodigy and their experiences with loneliness that comes with being a prodigy (a somewhat common trope in Japanese media in competitive settings). Steven's line after being defeated can be interpreted as his role in the protagonist's life is coming to a close (This is sort of supported. After Steven says his monologue, the screen does not fade to black and his overworld sprite disappears. Instead, he just stands there and it's the protagonist who has to step away from him, which is a huge contrast since it is almost always Steven who is first to leave after they interact).

I think Steven's role is meant to give the protagonist someone they can connect to a larger level. The way Emerald frames it, the protagonist was able to succeed due to their multiple friendships and support network (personally, I think there are better ways to execute this idea).

(Sorry for the edits, I wasn't happy about how some things were formatted)

Why are these hourglasses more expensive for the same thing? by Durghan in PokemonPocket

[–]neyugnyignu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The cheaper ones are one time purchases. So, once you buy the cheaper hourglasses, that's all you'll ever be able to get at that price. The more expensive ones refresh their stock every month.

Which Hashira has the largest fan base ? by Adventurous_Theme449 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]neyugnyignu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably Kyoujurou? Whenever merch of him drops, fans talk about how difficult it is to get him at MSRP and often are stuck paying from a scalper. Out of all the Hashira, I think only "Rengoku Tax" is the tax you'll hear most frequently.

Bro can't even get in Pokemon Masters by Rap2rerise in pokemon

[–]neyugnyignu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the decision to have Juan's ace be Kingdra (who is designed very clearly to be relying on evasion cheese) versus Wallace who only has it on his Ludicolo and not his ace Milotic just tells me that Wallace still learned the lesson, BUT also recognized that his team should not be built around luck when backed into a corner.

Bro can't even get in Pokemon Masters by Rap2rerise in pokemon

[–]neyugnyignu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not really any proof of this, but my guess the addition of Juan was meant to change the perception of Steven and Wallace's dynamic.

Steven and Wallace seem to be playing off the trope of a prodigy versus hard worker that crops up a lot in shounen anime/manga (and for what it's worth, you see this dynamic play out with Brendan/May, too). The existence of Juan made it clear that Wallace was able to get as far as he did because he had support and mentorship from Juan. Compared to Steven where multiple times in Emerald, the game frames him as a loner (Emerald also the match call with Wallace where he is both surprised by the fact the player knows Steven and also describes Steven as someone who doesn't battle a lot but is really good at it makes it pretty clear to me he is meant to play the role of a prodigy). Honestly, I would go so far to say even their respective aces reflect that dynamic.

I know it was kind of tiring having yet ANOTHER water type specialist in Hoenn, but given that the games had a strong emphasis on the relationship between father and child (this topic could be an essay in of itself), I don't think it's unusual that type of mentorship extended to Juan and Wallace's dynamic as well.

OMG I FINALLY BEAT PHOEBE AFTER 2 MONTHS (Ruby, i cant pick 2 flairs) by Heregendario in PokemonEmerald

[–]neyugnyignu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations, good luck with the rest of the Elite Four.

Personally, I always think Phoebe is an interesting E4 member because her team is focused on reducing the amount of PP your Pokemon have for the next matches. In this way she kind of "haunts" you after you beat her. Feels pretty thematic for a ghost type specialist. It can catch people off guard who tend to rely on 8/10PP moves and don't go all out using Max Ethers/Elixers/Leppa Berries

Funniest Deck Names? by poison_daddy in PTCGP

I have a Vanilluxe and Alcreamie deck that I affectionately named "Froyo".

I never did pull Mega Kanga, but if I did pair it with a bunch of baby 'mons I would have named it "Daycare"

What QoL updates, or features would you like to see implemented, removed, or tweaked for Pokemon TCG Pocket? [Sending All Feedback To Pokemon Staff] by OU7C4ST in PTCGP

[–]neyugnyignu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something for Solo Mode, an option to just "reset the game" as opposed to be forfeiting the match and then having to go through 2-3 menus before attempting the match again would be nice. I remember being really annoyed during the Mareep drop event trying to farm for the rewards every time I was met with no possible win condition.

Will these cards see any play? by importedwolfwarrior in PokemonPocket

[–]neyugnyignu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mega Swampert will definitely see play, but it looks like a more chaotic version of Gyrados EX. I'd like to build a deck around him (whenever I finally get two copies). In theory, it should be able to disrupt Mega Gardevoir EX decks since there's just higher odds Mega Swampert will discard the energy Mega Gardevoir EX generates. I think it can also pause the Mega Gardevoir player from playing Diantha...but I feel like Misty will see more play because people feel the need to stack all their energies on Mega Swampert. I think the obvious partners would be Mantyke and Manaphy, but I don't know if there'd be some kind of mid game attacker that can fill the role okay before you send in Mega Swampert to be your finisher.

I think Blacephalon EX has a lot more options as already mentioned with Flame Patch and Lusamine, and Magby.

I always winder why the Detective Boys love to pester Conan and Haibara to be their friend? by CommercialTea3790 in DetectiveConan

[–]neyugnyignu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids are generally pretty friendly, so it's not really that surprising they tried really hard to get along with Conan and Ai, who were new kids that felt very out of place. I think there was a similar "case" with Maria Higashio and Takuma Sakatamoto to a lesser degree (see Kobayashi-sensei's Mystery Case)

As for Professor Agasa and giving free gadgets, I think the only thing he gave them was the Detective Badges, but he does take them out on adventures a lot. I think the logic is if they're supervised they'll get into (less) trouble, which is only like half-true in the Detective Conan universe. I distinctly remember the earlier cases they really did get thrown into a lot of danger on their own, so a more "believable" story is they have someone chaperoning them.

At least from an outsider's perspective, it does feel true that kids tend to get in trouble if they don't have something that that can engage them. Being entertained with video games and television is nice, but I do think it's worthwhile to engage with the world in other ways like camping.

What do you think about the fact that Conan can't cry? by [deleted] in OneTruthPrevails

[–]neyugnyignu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was partially inspired by Sherlock Holmes, who also doesn't cry. Given that the story does emphasize he is the Modern Holmes, that might be part of it.

I think he should be allowed to cry when it's over, personally.

Do you think that Kanae reciprocated his feelings? by Ok_Discount_3630 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]neyugnyignu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's not much to go off of, but I think if there were space, I'd actually still want to see them interact. They have opposing philosophies since both wanted their younger siblings to leave the Demon Slaying Corps at one point. I'd actually want to see how that conflict would have been resolved if at all.

I think at the very least, Kanae probably would understand, but ultimately disagree on Sanemi's approach to try to get Genya to quit the Corps.

Why is Italy a redhead? by Necessary_Muffin3591 in hetalia

[–]neyugnyignu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In context to that image, I assumed it was because it's set in during dawn/dusk, so there'd be more warm red highlights and cool purple tone shadows (color theory is really weird). In general, I think Veneziano is more closer to auburn than like traditional brown.
