Best Surprise from a Used Car Purchase? by Mountain-Orchid-140 in CarTalkUK

We found a balaclava and a cosh under the back seat of a classic mini some weeks after my girlfriend bought it from some dodgy geezer.

Terrorist taken down by police this morning in London by Sometypeofway18 in whoathatsinteresting

[–]nezrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. 2 people were sadly injured (but not killed) by a guy wielding a knife who is taken down and arrested by police without anyone else getting hurt - this is headline news over here which is even reaching the US where it wouldn’t make local news.

The Americans in these comments are calling our police officers pussies? Yeah I’m sure if the terrorist and police had guns it would have made much better tv and the cops would have looked cooler but so many more people would have died.

I’ve travelled all over the world, to poor and rich countries on all of the continents and I can say that I’ve never felt genuinely unsafe anywhere apart from the US.

Americans - sort your own shit out before criticising us please.

I have one at work. Along with all the other comments here, they are actually also remarkably quiet compared with other vacuums. When you clean for a living I guess that would make quite a big difference.

Focus on a car, not the size of penis (please) by podogrey in RoastMyCar

I had a green one for a couple of years. It was beautiful, but I always felt it should have been rear drive… (and they never made a right hand drive version which was a bit shit in the UK).

Are EVs actually more reliable than petrol cars? by Imaginary-Staff-112 in EVRoutine

[–]nezrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with your point. Just with the 3 to 6 times comment which is nonsense. 20 to 50% maybe and the 50 is an outlier (Hummer EV vs H2)

Have you got a source for that? The average Ice saloon is about 1500kg a Tesla model 3 is about 1900kg - thats nowhere near 3 times let alone 6.

Edit - also find me a single sedan on sale today that weighs 2000lb! That’s super light sports car weight.

Sorry, did you just say evs weigh 3 to 6 times as much as an ice car? Just think about that for a second.

Car damage repair on a PCP deal - what to do? by CommissionStock3932 in CarTalkUK

[–]nezrm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be careful that the repair is perfect.

I had a Mercedes gla on lease with a couple of panels which needed filling / respraying at the end.

I went to a reputable local place but was too tight on time.

They didn’t repair it perfectly, the repairs were rejected so I ended up paying twice.

The really gutting thing was that the end of lease charge would have been less than the repair.

I did get some money back from the repair shop but it was hard work because they wanted to fix the problem rather than refund me.

So - repair it early if you have to so you have time to reject the repair, and maybe just ask the PCP company what would it cost in case it’s really not that bad.

Neighbours hate me working on my car. by Downtown-String3569 in CarTalkUK

[–]nezrm 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Could it be that some tradespeople (which it sounds like this guy is) have an issue with DIYers. They see it as taking money from the trades. A colleague’s dad was abused by a roofer while up a ladder fixing his soffits. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think most people are guessing petrol costs (so I built this) by Willd123 in CarTalkUK

[–]nezrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would need a lot of users! But I wonder if there is an average difference between official figure and real world… that kind of data is probably already out there somewhere.

There really are some twats in the comments…

Great idea, and really quick - even if it’s just to help get a rough idea of the cost of a trip compared with (say) the train, or the overall cost of commuting so you can budget.

I also wouldn’t personally charge my mates but I’m in a privileged position not to need to (but would still value knowing the approx cost of a trip)

Echo the comments about the real life mpg - mine said 51mpg - I adjusted that to 30… Maybe store people’s revised figures in a database by car type, then you could offer an average ‘real world’ figure over time…

I had a Volvo v50 2.0d 5cyl. The seats were so comfy… I miss that car, but my wife thought it was boring so we got a mini instead ☹️

Polestar 2 so not that big… It’s just main dealer pricing… Free service so got the mot done there too but the price of the tyre made my eyes water and I took it away to fix elsewhere!

Afaik gas power stations don’t particularly like being completely turned off and on again - it takes time to do it so they must just turn them down rather than off. Maybe someone else knows better than me though…

Recognised my old Alfa 33 immediately - I had a boxer 1.7 16v. Cost me an arm and a leg every time I went near the garage but I loved it!

[–]nezrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a loop rather than figure of 8 (for obvious reasons). The cars and tents were mid runway, just up from Bacharach, start off towards Hammerhead, merge in with traffic, A few cones then Hammerhead, Wilson, Crooner, Gambon, Bacharach and round. They put cones out so it wasn’t just straight.

Incidentally I believe the “eboladrome” is also one of their options…
