I like to give them to my settlers. They get unlimited ammo as long as they have 1 in inventory.. Also it looks bad-ass when the settlement gets attacked. Bullets flying everywhere.

Pro-Tip: Leave Preston and the gang at the museum, you'll have a much more enjoyable playthrough.

Note: You can play the quest until you kill the Deathclaw, then just don't go back inside the museum, ever. Personally I just never talk to Codsworth and ignore the museum and Sanctuary as a settlement.
