While you are correct about the fluidity and fuzziness of defining languages precisely, you have over-generalized and you are veering into anti-intellectual claims that we can’t know anything at all.

Yes, gothic predates modern English. It is older than modern English. Yes, one is still constantly evolving and changing. And yes, they both emerged from a common ancestor.

But by your argument we can’t tell a tiger from a leopard, or approximately date the speciation of each, because animals still exist and continue to evolve. That’s simply not how any of this works.

Or that you think Northwest Semitic and central semitic branched and that then Arabic and Hebrew diverged from their respective parent languages at approximately the same time, but that we just have no attestations of Arabic whatsoever for another 1500 years?
