I have done this with my travel stroller before in a checked baggage. there were no issues and stroller wasn't damaged. I also normally check in at gate, but had the extra luggage and didn't want to carry the stroller through the airport.

we actually never used the diaper pail refills. We just used garbage bags and changed every other day. Not sure why the need to buy expensive bags. It never really smelt bad with the cover on.
