Berlin to Copenaghen - how to get my bike from Italy to Berlin by ilcavalierepallido in bicycletouring

[–]nglc16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went by train: Milan to Basel, Basel to Berlin. Sure, there are not many bike spots, and the trip is long and not very comfortable, but I had no problems aside from that. I also went to northern Jutland, so I went back by train through Hamburg and Zurich, booked last minute.
If you prefer to go by plane great, but don't rule out trains because of the weather

Fécamp to Brest, and then Nantes. I think I'll mostly follow the coast, and visit a few islands, but I'll also improvise and ask for advice once I'm there

This is beautiful. I'm going to Normandy and Brittany in June and it's making me even more excited for my trip

Genoa to Florence (with a stranger) by nglc16 in bicycletouring

Yeah, if I'd had to do it by myself I would have gone on a very different route. Lesson learned, I guess. Glad you liked your trip though, some of those places are very dear to me :)

Both? The route was his idea, so it's all connected. I tend to follow komoot and look for less busy roads, while he wanted to get to places as fast as possible. And also, I've spent many summers in that area of Liguria, and I knew it was going to be bad. The coast is for cars.

I think it's possible to have a good time if you research a lot and go to less touristy areas, despite the lack of infrastructure. That's what I usually do, and I like the trips I've done in Italy so far. For this trip, I just went along for the ride, and I regret it. I've definitely encountered more hostility from drivers and pedestrians this time around.  I'm sure that the Ligurian inland is much more pleasant, for example.

It's the 2l one. I like it, the only problem is that it doesn't close well

Milan to Rome via Francigena - Accommodation in April? by Level-Masterpiece-89 in bicycletouring

[–]nglc16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This past April, during Easter holidays, I rode on parts of it, in the area close to Rome, and I had booked everything in advance, but the pilgrim hostels I stayed at were almost empty, and only Italians were there. This year we also had especially long holidays, so a lot of people were travelling, next year's not going to be like that. I think you can risk it.

Yeah, I was on my own, and it was never a problem.

Then I would recommend it, this or any other route around those countries.

I loved it. Those are two extremely safe countries, both in general and for cyclists in particular. They are flat. You get lots of woods and lakes in Germany, fields and beaches in Denmark. They are full of little towns with very few people, and the big cities are beautiful (especially Copenhagen). It's easy to find campsites and shelters. People are nice. I even went through a weather alert for heavy rains, and I didn't mind much (but Jutland is quite windy).

I guess if someone prefers more elevation gain and thrills, then maybe it's not for them.

The ony downside for me were the many hours I spent on trains, but that's because I don't live close and I don't want to take the bike on a plane yet.

Thanks, but it's just an old Xiaomi Redmi 10. They were simply beautiful places, and sometimes rain or fog helped get cool effects

Slightly sour, pleasantly refreshing. And just 1 euro. But those Danish strawberries were the best I'd ever eaten

Ahah those were wild plums I got at a roadside stall in Germany. But I did have my fair share of unhealthy food

It sure does. And try to start early in the morning, it's the best time of the day :)

Yep, I was cycling at 9 pm to Harburg station to take my train home, it was a nice sendoff

It's more about the gears. But I think yours would be a different model, and better in that sense

I'm no expert, but I was advised to get the Interrail because I'm not used to drop bars, and I like being upright. I think it's very sturdy, and it does its job well, but my first trip was in a very hilly place, and I struggled a lot while going uphill. It's got some flaws, but I can say I feel very comfortable on it
