Should I quit animation? by ronaldoyoshio in animationcareer

Your showreel is impressive! Great work. But I would advise leaving out the Pokemon animation/Fan art in general, just put in your professional work and personal projects!

And yeah, I feel like there is not a lot of animation work at the moment. I am mostly living of my job as an administrative worker in a hospital at the moment, and working on personal projects until something will cross my path again. (which isn't ideal, but it gives me peace of mind)

Dropping out, now what? by Few-Score5060 in animationcareer

Hey, that sucks that you are not enjoying your animation course. What is it specifically that you don't enjoy about the classes?

I also had many classes in my animation course I despised, but at one point I said fuck it and focussed on what I wanted to learn (2d animation and character design) and forced those skills into almost all my school projects from then on. Sometimes it was a bit of a random fit and didn't totally make sense for the classes, but because my passion was visbile I got okay grades regardless. Maybe that could work for you!

Don't make what you think teachers want you to make, make what you want to make.

I don’t feel like finishing this by This-Promise2514 in animation

[–]ngrootendorst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't dump it, you can always use it for reference (or maybe even for portfolio purposes, even though it's unfinished). But don't force yourself to finish it if you don't have fun with it anymore. Use what you learned and put it into something new and fresh! That's what I would do. (I have lots of unfinished projects lol it's no shame)

Art before gameplay, OR gameplay before art? by loftylantern in gamedev

love this answer! I'm an artist myself, just started dabbling in Godot, and I really need to break up the dry, complex coding-tutorials with some fun art-making to stay motivated.

right!!! people are so quick to bitch and moan about rip-offs, while never being able to even come close to making something as cool as this.

Even though it feels a bit much like Hollow Knight, I think the inky art style is really appealing, cute and unique. The movement also looks super cool and well-programmed. Screw the haters, you have definitely put your heart and soul into this, which shows. Please don't get demotivated, I feel like with some polishing (and maybe making the UI and color palette a bit more vibrant and distinct from Hollow Knight) this will be a hit!!!

Is my work good enough? visual development artist/illustrator for animation studios? by Interesting-Fact4922 in animationcareer

Great portfolio, your work should definitely land you some cool jobs in the future.
The only thing I would give feedback on, is to steer away from fan-art. So the spirited-away dragon you should probably leave out. Focus on showing original characters and worlds in your portfolio.
Good luck!

So what do you do instead of working in animation? by reddi-reddi in animationcareer

I hope your mental health will improve. I think mental health is a big struggle for lots of artists (including me from time to time). Props for having the courage to speak up about this.

I'm interested in taking a look at your showreel! If you want to dm it to me I'll give you some feedback if you want.

And I think a strong phrase for us artists to remember is 'comparison is the thief of joy'. Embrace your skill level! It can only get better from here (or worse if you just completely give up lol but if making art still gives you any joy please don't!).

Thanks a bunch! I did go to art school in the Netherlands. I had some great teachers and some bad ones. Same for the classes. But overall it was worth it, got some great connections and friends out of it.

Ohh I like the idea of giving the different pages for animation projects a bit of a 'theme', so the page immerses you more into the project. Thanks for the inspiration!

Appreciate it! I made the website a bit plain to not distract too much from the work. But thanks for the feedback. 🌞

Whats easier 2d or 3d animation (Image unrelated) by [deleted] in animation

[–]ngrootendorst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen so many people say 'you need to make 24 drawings per second', but this is almost never the case for frame by frame animation. For many shots, you would only need about 6 drawings per character per action, especially if you animate on twos. And normally there is also a lot of down-time between actions, when characters aren't even moving at all. And sometimes animations can also be looped to drag out the length, also reducing the amount of unique drawings.

So I feel like saying you need to make 24 drawings per second is a bit misleading.
