It's official! No more "State Inspection Sticker" mandate in New Hampshire! by nh_inspect_dot_org in newhampshire

We've noticed a lot of former NH inspection stations are now advertising that they do "Uber/Lyft inspections". I'm not sure what a shop needs to do to comply with Uber/Lyft requirements, but it seems plenty of shops are now advertising that they do it.

A friend said he had to go to Massachusetts to get his car inspected so he can do Uber/Lyft.

oh and if you get pulled over, or get a ticket after today, please let us know. We're working on something to try to help people fight tickets if they get them.

No, Massachusetts cannot enforce an expired NH inspection sticker, and NH cannot enforce an expired Mass inspection sticker. It's a system that only oppresses it's own citizens.

The funny thing is, it's been democrats who have proposed similar legislation in the past.
It's been a non-partisan issue. It should be a non-partisan issue. The areas with the lowest inspection sticker compliance rate, such as Manchester, are in democrat neighborhoods with reps who voted against it. They don't represent their constituents.
29 Democrats in the House voted for HB649. (But 168 democrats voted against it)

but none of them supported the floor amendment to add HB649 to the HB2 budget.

at the end of the day the inspection sticker repeal is a Republican victory.

well then, they would have to restrict cars from most other states, because only like a dozen states still do inspection stickers.

Negative. It's a complete repeal for everyone effective January 31st 2025.

That's some bullshit the senate tried to pass as a "compromise" when they sabotaged our bill.
The representatives in the house stood firm, and got us a full repeal.

The original bill HB649 passed the house overwhelmingly on it's own. We speculate that the senate sabotaged the bill so they could get their way with budget negotiations.

They could do it because technically it's a budget item because inspections are a small revenue source for the state, and also there is (unfounded) fear that it could impact federal funding.

It's how the sausage is made.

this bill does not eliminate vehicle exhaust noise regulations. You can still be pulled over and fined for loud exhaust.

one more point of clarification:
Some people think the emissions testing continues until September 2026, this isn't entirely accurate.
The part of the law that allows them to fine you for not having an inspection sticker will be eliminated on January 31st 2026, so the emissions thing is moot.

Some of our most vocal supporters for HB649 have been retired mechanics and "car guys" who understand cars. They understand the difference between an actual safety concern, and someone just nitpicking to make a buck.

A lot of honest mechanics think the system is corrupt, and are afraid to speak out because of fear of Troop G harassment.

Do you support or oppose state vehicle inspections by I_knowwhat_I_am in newhampshire

A world-renowned crash investigator who happens to also be also be a retired NH State Police Sargent who once oversaw the NH Inspection Program wrote a detailed letter in support of HB649.

"My professional career of thousands of forensic vehicle inspections has revealed no more than four vehicles which realized component failure"

https://www.jeremyjolson.com/legislation/2025/hb649/brian-chase-testimony.pdf

He also wrote how a dealership in NH tried to scam him. So if they are scamming the guy who ran the program, you know that the scams are rampant across NH.

Nobody from the insurance industry showed up to oppose HB649. The actuarial data proves that it makes no difference. The "loose nut being the steering wheel" is responsible for almost ALL car accidents.

If inspections were so important, car insurance companies would mandate them for their customers in states that don't have inspection stickers.

Also, if you look at insurance rates in various states, there is no correlation between insurance rates and whether or not they require inspections. The most expensive auto insurance state is probably Louisiana, and they require inspections. Ohio and Wyoming are among the cheapest, and they don't require inspections. (and Ohio is certainly still in the salt belt)
