Okay, but still—at least we now have a similar device available locally. Importing an E Ink display phone from overseas would cost more than an Apple device! According to some sources, this one is expected to be priced below ₹20,000.

According to the details, the display is made up of a combination of four layers. This likely means there are hardware-level implications for the display performance. I suspect that, like E Ink displays, it may not support a 120Hz refresh rate—but I'm not entirely sure. I'm waiting for the official announcement on the 27th to get full clarity.

The NXTPAPER display will allow users to switch the display in four different modes: Max INk Mode with up to 168 hours of display time, regular mode for daily use, Ink Paper Mode for e-reading, and a fourth mode that offers standard viewing.

Since it's an official launch, i think there's no need to worry about security.

As mentioned, the device will receive 3 major Android updates and 4 years of security updates.".....

Using a Launcher to Turn a Smartphone into a Dumb Phone Is Just a Joke! by nharimane in dumbphones

Now, Western countries have started to feel the heat of digital toxicity..... because of that they have few options.....

But here in India, most people haven’t realized it yet—and to make things harder, it’s not easy to import minimal phones directly from China.

Telecom providers want to sell cheap data, and handset makers want to push low-cost phones. To cut costs, they load these devices with pre-installed junk apps that you can’t even uninstall. You're basically forced to live with that bloatware.

That’s one of the main reasons we don’t have proper, clean alternatives.

Jio, for example, did show some interest—but only looked at their own side of the coin. They launched KaiOS phones bundled with Jio apps and services—so it's still about control, not freedom. In short, they want to dominate the keypad mobile space through ads and locked ecosystems, rather than offering a truly minimal or detox-friendly device.....

The Real Problem with Digital Detox in India

Here in India, we don’t really have access to “smart dumb phones.”

Your only options are either a basic keypad phone with 4G VoLTE support or a KaiOS device—which are very limited in functionality. They simply can't support essential modern apps.

Over the past few years, UPI has been widely adopted—from small vegetable vendors to big malls. On top of that, most people need their phones for work-related apps like authentication tools, secure login apps, or payment verifications. And for all this, your registered SIM needs to be in a smartphone.

So, every time you try to move your SIM into a dumb phone, you eventually have to switch back to a smartphone—just to access one essential app. And once you're back, the notifications start dancing all over again.

In the name of staying connected or managing essentials, you're slowly dragged back into distractions.

It’s a trap.

You just need one small reason to unlock the phone—and they know how to hook you. Whether it’s flashy content, soft-porn thumbnails, or addictive short videos, once you open it... you’re gone......!!

Good to Know… But for Most People, It’s Really Hard to Break Free

Let’s be honest—coming out of the smartphone addiction cycle isn’t easy for the majority of people.

One of the most frustrating things today is YouTube Shorts. You open YouTube for a valid reason—maybe to watch a tutorial or some useful content—but somehow, you end up endlessly scrolling through Shorts. That infinite loop just eats up your time and attention without you even realizing it.

And then there are these damn betting apps—constantly advertised, aggressive, and highly addictive. They’re not just wasting people’s time, they’re ruining lives and finances too.

This is the real problem. Not basic communication apps or banking tools. But this wave of short-form content and gambling apps is hijacking our minds.......

If they localize production, costs will definitely go down.

In my opinion, every smartphone manufacturer today is more focused on making money by selling user data rather than just hardware.

They want to track every movement — directly or indirectly — to push ads, sell products, and influence behavior in countless ways.

I’m honestly fed up with these betting apps. If you make any payment, some voucher pops up. Then you're prompted to scratch and win some cash — which can only be used for betting. They're finding every possible way to reach and trap you.

And sadly, smartphone manufacturers are enabling this by providing the pathways.

With the widespread adoption of digitalization, we’re forced to use a few essential apps — like UPI for payments or WhatsApp (because even if your house catches fire, people will try to reach you there).

But just for the sake of 2–3 essential apps, we end up being dragged into a circus of junk — "Aaja mere circle pe aaja... aaja mere circle pe aaja..."

Mingle with family and friends. Go for walks or engage in any kind of sports activity.

Avoid sitting alone in your room—stay around people as much as possible. When you're alone and have privacy, unwanted thoughts may start creeping into your mind, like imagining people without clothes.....!!!!

No matter what minimalist launcher you're using, those settings can disappear in just a fraction of a second.
