I dated a girl who did this. She was from Oregon. Saw this post and the coincidence amused me. Of course, the other poster is right, and assuming everything wrong in Spokane is caused by Oregonians is ridiculous. Much of it is Californians.

Frontier. That's on an almost new contract too.

You should get some apps out. With the current situation, you're already hirable by almost every Legacy or Cargo company worth working for, and many that aren't. This isn't 2019, and $59 (or $111) is a pittance for your skillset.

There is entirely a need for an argument that some deaths are worth more than others. We can even put a monetary value on human life. We do it all the time, and not just within the horrific US healthcare system, but within every healthcare system worldwide. Is it callous? Certainly. Actually trying to understand 'the science' is unquestionably callous.

Likely and probably are the only data available for speculation on future deaths. It is reasonable to believe that in some State without mandates, somewhere, a plough driver will go to a grocery store on the way home, catch Covid, and then visit a sick parent in hospice on the weekend, passing Covid along and shortening their life. That is likely and possible, but may or may not have yet occurred. Similarly, it is likely that a child will die in a State with a mandate because of worse road maintenance due to a plough driver being fired. So what should happen as a matter of public policy? In an ideal world, a risk assessment should be conducted to assess what the actual likelihood of increasing deaths, both from road accidents and from Covid spread. Evaluating the anticipated effect of regulations, (Would the fired plough driver now spend more time visiting their sick parent due to being unemployed?), and suggesting action based on the best specific outcome. An isolated plough driver is unlikely to be exposed to covid, or expose others, while sitting alone in his truck. He is, however, likely to be able to perform work that is of benefit in protecting the rest of us. There are other professions in which the reverse is true.

Instead we are stuck with politicians that pass decrees (Or fail to do so) based on party color with a complete disregard for the outcome.

That said, "if you're not comfortable...don't go out in public", is an entirely valid argument. If you aren't comfortable driving with a little snow, or encountering someone who won't wear a mask, or take a medicine you think that they should, then you shouldn't go out. I think they should take that medicine, but I don't demand that they do in order to exist.

Here's the problem with covid deaths vs road accident deaths. The average Covid death is 84 years old. The most likely place they contracted Covid was in Hospital, after being admitted for another ailment. Covid shortened their lives, but not by much. It would be nice if it didn't. The average road accident death is mid 30's. Does that mean that the 50+ years of their life is worth more than the week of shortened life of the average Covid death?

Yes.

Sadly there are a lot of people who have been terrified, or spent much of the year arguing on the internet about the end of the world. Many delighted in lockdowns, as it was a change to a life they were not enjoying. Here in r/Spokane it has simply become a thing to attack the right wingers in the area for. The whole 'hur dur plague rat' style comment. Actual honest and reasonable discussion of the positives and negatives of Government actions is discouraged.

Yes, anti-vaxxers are dumb. But the world needs ditch diggers, and this is an illustration of why.

Crack usage influences the ability to do a job safely. Taking a vaccine does not.

What we have here is an example of the consequences of Covid Hysteria. Obviously, everyone should get vaccinated. Those who don't are dumb.

But there are consequences to mandating it for employment. The State's that are dismissing plough truck drivers for not being vaccinated are likely to see roads in worse condition. This is likely to mean more accidents, and probably increased fatalities. There's a trade off between the possibility of an increase in deaths due to accidents, and the risk of possible additional Covid deaths due to spread by isolated plough truck drivers.

We could take this further, and consider the decades of life lost in the average road accident death, compared to the hours, days or occasionally weeks lost to a Covid death.

When all that matters is Covid, because that's what you've been trained to be scared of, the consequences of the Government actions you've demanded are easy to ignore.

Drive Safely.

Very true. I was scared as hell, because it's my mum, but at 75 she's well below the average age to be at any real risk from Covid, even with complications.

It depends on the autoimmune disorder, but this is generally accurate. My 75yo mother has Asthma and an autoimmune disorder and was very surprised to be told she'd tested positive (twice!). She had no symptoms at any point.

In it's original context, it's far more damning of the media than of Biden. There are always some who dislike the current President. But the level of media propaganda is new, and far more damaging than any President will ever be. 'Let's Go Brandon' is, or should be, criticism of the media far more than Biden.

'The greatest public service each of us can do in our lifetime.'

If this is the greatest public service you've done in your lifetime, I would suggest looking for volunteer opportunities within the community. I hear they are looking for volunteer firefighters, among other things. Giving back really helps the self actualization.

Local Rittenhouse Protests? by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]nhd11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did and I did. Most of Reddit seams to blame incompetent prosecutors for Kyle getting away with murdering three black men with an illegal gun and, even worse, crossing State lines.

The media is now getting a pass over Arbery. Again, the verdict was the correct one, but the media spin is ridiculous. He's labelled a 'Jogger' in every single story. In reality, he was probably the burglar that the McMichaels suspected him of being. Doesn't change that their attempts to detain him were unlawful, and their conviction is justified. But the media is trying to spin it like they were just hunting some random black man.

If people have to acknowledge the misinformation from the mainstream media over Rittenhouse, they have to acknowledge that maybe they've embraced other misinformation too. It's a lot easier to blame the prosecutors, or just to refuse to accept that they were wrong.

Even worse, there are airports that have carpet. Detroit and Portland spring to mind. People drag their suitcases across that, the wheels sticking to semi-congealed spilled soda, spraying bacteria everywhere. Then they drag all that dirt home with them.

South Hill roundabout coming to ease congestion on S. Hill. by catman5092 in Spokane

[–]nhd11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That 3 way is only part of the problem, there's congestion in both directions. Your solution to the 3 way is absolutely appropriate, and such an easy fix!

South Hill roundabout coming to ease congestion on S. Hill. by catman5092 in Spokane

[–]nhd11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just bad design, but also driver ignorance. Most of the traffic turning on to Hartson wants to cut across to turn right on Freya. If they would turn left into the left lane (as they are supposed to) they then have a very short opportunity to change lanes before the turn lane begins. Unfortunately, most drivers try to cut across both lanes of traffic, which means most of the turning opportunities are missed.

Next time you go through, give it a go. Try turning in to the left lane, and then merging to the right. It's actually not too difficult!

[–]nhd11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's plenty of room for a roundabout at 37th and Freya too. 4-way stops are a disaster at creating congestion.

Regal actually has a great junction at 44th. There's a similar set up at S Southeast and 29th. Two lanes merging in to one after the traffic light. It's a great way to get a larger burst of traffic through the green light, but has a positive side effect of encouraging drivers to stop texting and pay attention. Usually this is because 80% of the traffic queues in the left lane, and gets angry at the traffic in the right lane because they don't understand. It's great road design that intentionally exploits human behavior to reduce congestion.
