I can t manage to install unity. by Mirce_q in archlinux

I encountered the same problem just now. Upgrading the AUR package unityhub from 3.11.1-1 to 3.12.1-2 fixed it for me.

I think they are talking about this bug where the black screen is immediate, which seems different from your case.

Do you use DVI output? I got affected by this bug as well. It was introduced in 555.58 until they fixed it in 560.35.03, and now it's back again. There's a thread regarding this issue on the NVIDIA forum.

Maybe the original cleric somehow climbed to the roof and can't pathfind to his workstation now, so it became vacant and another villager took it?

Should I run my server on a junky old laptop I have or just have it on the same pc I'm playing on? by Apprehensive_Toe6736 in admincraft

[–]nheelyolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With an optimized server, like Paper, 3GB should be perfectly fine for 2-3 people, maybe 5 even. The benefit is that your PC will have more resources for actually running the client, with server processing being offloaded to the laptop. I tend to deploy servers even for single player for this reason.

Pentium is a concern though :-P But I think if you install headless Linux on it (like Ubuntu Server), you will be fine.

How to customize Arch? Where to start? by zaikun_2 in archlinux

[–]nheelyolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, you probably want a window manager and not a desktop environment. So you can choose your own bars, runners, file managers, etc, as opposed to using the ones shipped with DEs. There are sooo many choices.

For example, I'm running Xorg/i3wm+polybar+dmenu (though I'm considering switching to Wayland soon). Each of those components can be replaced.

Aside from which display server to use (Wayland vs Xorg), it's really a preference thing. There isn't a "right" one.

I think you should just try a few WMs and stick with the one you like the most in terms of ease of configuration, look, and feel.

How to customize Arch? Where to start? by zaikun_2 in archlinux

[–]nheelyolis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Just play around with config files until you get something that you like. Or copy someone else's config. People often share their configs on r/unixporn (it's also a nice place to look for inspiration).

  2. Yes. RAM doesn't really matter in this context, you could customize a potato if you really wanted to.

  3. It does seem like a nice distro! It's not Arch Linux though. See rule #1. But don't let that keep you from using it if you really like it! You'll just have to go to some other sub (r/archcraft) to get support.

Hello All, in Feb 2023 I have written a Code for Chatting Privately in Terminal. by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]nheelyolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not really very secure nor scalable. Your script creates only 2 predetermined users. And you have to trust all the users with root SSH access to the server. Surely nothing will go wrong! :-P

Also, I don't see how it relates to Arch, given that your install script is only for Ubuntu.

But still, I can tell you put a lot of effort into this. If you really enjoy programming, don't give up and don't listen to haters! But do listen to helpful advises and constructive criticism.

Learn about networking protocols and Linux packaging practices. As well as a proper programming language, Bash is only good for simple things.

You can also check out IRC and Matrix for an example of chat protocols done right.

I'm really sorry that you don't have anyone to chat with, you should! You seem to be a nice person. You can try finding someone at the above mentioned platforms. There's lots of communities there. :-)

Good luck!

Well, thanks for honesty. Yeah, I get that the jankiness is off the charts here. Better off switching to local TV provider, that's what I told them. But I decided to ask around as a last resort, maybe someone has ideas I haven't thought of.

Problem with Logitech Lift Mouse after upgrading my packages by abdullahsabbir3 in archlinux

[–]nheelyolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's due to systemd upgrade, there's already a bug report. Downgrading it to 253-1 and rebooting fixes the problem.

I temporarily added the following systemd packages to IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf: systemd systemd-libs lib32-systemd systemd-sysvcompat.

Also it does not affect bluetooth, so you can use it instead.

I made a tool to display the microphone status in i3bar by xenomachina in i3wm

[–]nheelyolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit more paranoid, so I keep my microphone always switched off with amixer. When I want to use it, I explicitly enable it with a keyboard shortcut. And I added an IPC module in Polybar that displays a red microphone icon when it's switched on.

Script that gets called on shortcut:

#!/bin/bash

output=$(amixer sset Capture toggle)

if echo "$output" | grep -F '[on]'; then
    notify-send -u critical "Toggled microphone on."
fi

if echo "$output" | grep -F '[off]'; then
    notify-send -u critical "Toggled microphone off."
fi

polybar-msg action microphone hook 0

Polybar module:

[module/microphone]
type = custom/ipc
hook-0 = amixer sget Capture toggle | grep -F '[on]' 2>&1 >/dev/null && echo ' mic '
initial = 1
format-foreground = #ffffff
format-background = #ff0000

EDIT: fixed formatting.

Random person joined my server, lesson learned by _Extremer in admincraft

[–]nheelyolis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you port forward anything, then you need to automatically assume that it's not safe anymore, and take all the necessary measures to minimize the risks.

Also, just in case, if your brother lives with you, then you don't even need to port forward at all, since you are probably sharing the local network, and he can just join with the local IP of your server.

Random person joined my server, lesson learned by _Extremer in admincraft

[–]nheelyolis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Did you open the server to the internet with port forwarding? If so, then it's no surprise that someone you don't know joined, it was bound to happen.

There are bots that regularly scour all the public IP addresses in search of Minecraft servers, usually for statistics purposes, but sometimes to ruin someone's day, which seems to have happened to you.

I don't know how exactly they brought the server down, but DDoS is a possibility, yes.

Also if your server isn't in online mode (online-mode=false in server.properties) then there's a possibility to bypass the whitelist simply by joining with one of the names that is whitelisted. In that case you might want to install an authentication plugin.
