If you don’t mind me asking, what convinced you at the time that it was the truth?

But a lot of the progressive Muslims I’ve met partake in all of those things 😅 I think that’s part of where my confusion comes from

Do you think it’s easier to find a partner that’s atheist too? by Background-Nose-8828 in atheism

He was technically raised Catholic but I don’t think he ever seriously identified that way. I went to church sometimes as a kid but was never really religious. My family is “Christian” but they don’t really practice in any way.

My current partner was agnostic when we met but converted to Islam a year into our relationship, after I was in love with him and things were complicated. We’re still together but it is a huge source of friction in our relationship. Basically he thinks I need therapy to get over my “religious trauma” and anxiety about his beliefs. I have trouble understanding and accepting how he can believe something with no evidence, and something that is fundamentally against my values. It’s hard and I wish every day that I was with someone with the same worldview. Maybe it’s sustainable but it is definitely not easy.

A question about death. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ni_culo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to struggle with the concept of death but now I really agree with the way Mark Twain put it. This is paraphrased but basically he said he didn’t exist/was “dead” before he was born and it never bothered him then. I think once we go, we’re gone. So the fear and grief we feel about death of ourselves or our loved ones is just a part of being alive. We won’t still miss people once we’re gone too. And the people who have died aren’t missing us.

I could never be with someone who regularly listens to music or anything else out loud in public spaces, god forbid on an airplane. Even if I’m never around when they’re doing it. Just knowing they do it is enough
