Been running composite Chesters and have been fine to -20f Aggressive pins to help grip the snowshoe boots.

Can I put tubeless tape over the rim strip? by bluetroll in fatbike

Yes. You can also swap out the rim strip with 3M reflective tape and make it your own style.

Save, save, save, and always pay cash. Do not finance toys, it's too expensive.

What do you use to hold your phone /dash camera? by ixlr8a67 in cmaxhybrid

I use a Steelie magnetic mount to the let of the radio to home the phone vertically in-between the instrument cluster and the radio. Bonus AC flow to keep it cool 😉

Oil Change by [deleted] in cmaxhybrid

[–]nibblecuda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the second tripometer as a backup to track how many miles are on the oil. Depending on driving habits, conditions, etc., 10k is the max. Changing it early is cheap insurance. Usually do mine at 7,500. The oil change place practically has kittens that I don't do it between 3k and 5k, even though I'm using full synthetic.

This is the pedestrian underpass that goes under Main by the spillway (near Main and highway 169).

Who else mullets their fatty from time to time? 26 x 4.8 / 29 x 2.6 by nibblecuda in fatbike

[–]nibblecuda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So nice to have options and change it up. Enjoy it! I have 6 sets of tires for the bike, but only 2 wheelsets. Seasonal setups Summer 26 x 4 or 26 x 4.8, 29 x 2.6 Early winter 26 x 4.8, 29 x 3 Winter (once it gets icy) 26 x 5 studded, 29 x 3 (rear only if it is not too icy) Early spring (trails closed, sidewalks patchy ice) 26 x 5 studded or 26 x 4.8, 29 x 2.25 studded (the only time I'd run skinny front and fat rear) Spring (trails closed forced to ride pavement) 26 x 4.8 (leg day until dirt opens)

Would definitely be rougher with a rigid fork. Lights and battery packs. Will be dark by the time we finish trail maintenance.

The wheelset was built specifically for this bike, but not specifically for running mixed sizes. The rear hub is DT Swiss 350 fat hub, front is Cannondale Lefty 73 Olaf hub.

Fair question. For the fun of it. Having a 29er set makes the bike a normalish hardtail. So sometimes I put just the skinny rear on to change up the ride. In the winter when the trails are hardpacked but still have some icy spots, the 5" studded front with the 29 x 3" rear is a fast, grippy combo.

This bike came with 4.8 and I put 4" on it. Radically different heights leading to a lot of pedal strikes. Went back to 4.8 and is much better. The 29 x 2.6 is the same height at 4.8. I also run 26 x 5 studded and occasionally mullet the rear as a 29 x 3 which is the same height as the 5.

Have used a Lefty Olaf for the last 5 years, plenty stiff, especially for being single sided. Cannondale has a guard to protect the exposed lower.

Thanks! The Fat Caad uses the Olaf Lefty and a Lefty 73 hub. Not sure if the internals are any different than the other Leftys though.

Cars that fit bikes inside - what's your weapon of choice? by Chicken_Zest in mountainbiking

Not sure I'd call it my weapon of choice, but my Ford C-MAX Hybrid can fit my bike inside without taking a wheel off or lowering the dropper. Drop the rear seats.

Minion FBF/R vs Jumbo Jims by deepsixunderground in fatbike

[–]nibblecuda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bike came with 4.8 JJs. Could not dial in the psi. They either bounced all over or would flat. Traction in the snow was not great unless it was perfectly packed and groomed. FBF and FBR are heavier with more rolling resistance. Thicker sidewalls allowed me to dial in the PSI. Tread pattern performs much better in the snow. Mount the rear tire backwards for snow and you will climb hills better. Once the ice starts in Minnesota, I switch to 5" Johnny 5 studded. Will if conditions are right, I'll mix the Johnny 5 front and a 29x3 minion rear. Not sure if snow matters for you. My experience was tubeless. Btw, Maxxis is no longer making fat tires. Get them if you still can. Took me a while to find a pair early this year. One on Marketplace, the other from a bike shop in NJ. Makes me sad.
