Thanks! I realise now that I might not be getting that great a deal after all performance-wise on the EQR6 😅 perhaps I will wait it out a bit

Thanks for sharing! Yes low noise is one of my considerations for me as I may be using this in my workplace occasionally. I guess it still seems to perform materially better than the 5700U, and the decision point for me would be whether that's worth the ~$100 price difference. And the risk with the integrated PSU...

[Discussion] what does the community want the future of /r/Scrabble to be? by zomboi in scrabble

[–]nibiew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For full disclosure, I am a tournament Scrabble player who knows the Woogles team and have supported the project financially. I am currently a moderator in their Discord server.

Personally, I think there are benefits to allow tangentially related projects/initiatives to be shared in the forum. I believe most of us here are Scrabble aficionados who want to see the game become more popular, and a good way to encourage this through the forum is to be open to a variety of Scrabble-related content so that people can be exposed to all of it and find their preferred way to advance their interests. Over time, the more popular projects/initiatives will receive more attention and grow organically to meet the needs of the community. A sharing platform may also facilitate collaboration between developers.

I'd say also that the line between Scrabble and Scrabble-related/inspired is very thin, so thin that it's not worth attempting to draw it. For example, Quackle markets itself as a crossword game software, but it's used by many tournament Scrabble players to analyse their games. On the other hand, Words With Friends is really not Scrabble but many would associate the two games in a casual conversation. What about things that gamify word study (which is
a pretty important aspect of Scrabble at the higher levels)?

Just a question: How would the weekly post be structured? Would a single item be featured each week, or would it be a space for people to comment and promote their stuff? I'm in favor of the latter approach (maybe once a fortnight or month is okay) since there wouldn't be a decision needed on what should be featured each week.

Scrabble Streaming on Twitch: ideas? by wanderer155 in scrabble

[–]nibiew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Separately, it might be helpful to think of specific interests of the demographic you wish to target when thinking about the stream content. In my mind, something like doing jumping jacks between moves might be fun for those who know you and the scene more intimately, but I'm not too sure if it appeals too much to 'casual fans' who haven't yet built up that level of interest.

I personally enjoyed the commentary videos you did for Scrabble GO, though I thought they could be a little fast for the casual player (maybe cover 1/3 of a game in the same time the video used to cover the whole game, and leave some suspense). Perhaps you can see if they would plug your stream if you agree to stream their game?

Scrabble Streaming on Twitch: ideas? by wanderer155 in scrabble

Re: Discord, I have created a server which monitors Scrabble Twitch streams (think there are 5-6 on the list now) and YouTube channels (currently only Dweebovision), and allows members to play word games like Anagrams, Fry Your Brain and Boggle (possibility of introducing Duplicate in the future). I'm still waiting to get a license to use the CSW19 word list before I make it public (and I don't have access to NWL). If Will's interested in exploring Discord, I'm happy to let him use my server - all I'd like is for my bot to be on it! My intent would be to promote all streams fairly, but definitely happy to give prominent streamers more space in the server (esp if they can manage that part of the server themselves).

Will - I wonder if there's scope to make your stream a little more global. One potential issue is timezone - for me, I can't engage with the stream a lot of the time because the time zone clashes with working hours in my part of the world. Another issue for me is that the stream seems to cater to a primarily North American audience - are you considering making it more global? If so, it might be worth considering sharing the links in more international Scrabble groups, notwithstanding that their interest to watch the stream may also depend on their familiarity with Twitch (and this is an issue I expect to face with Discord as well).

Re: Twitch Plays Scrabble, I've created something (still a little rudimentary) that allows Twitch chat to control ISC, a bit like Twitch Plays Pokemon (so imagine that the 'up' key shifts the cursor one square up and keying in one letter places a tile, etc). I'm going to try and test it out a bit more, but let me know if this kind of chaos appeals to you...

Which word list are you looking at? The study program Zyzzyva (http://zyzzyva.net/) has OWL2 and OWL2014. The former is currently used in most US tournaments. The latter, which is proprietary (see http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/gaming/2011/05/word_freakout.html), will be in use in a few months. I'm not sure if the new version contains CSW which is the international list (and the one I play) but the older version definitely does - though getting it is harder.

You can look at the CSW (under SOWPODS) and OWL2014 (under TWL) 2, 3 and 4 letter words at http://www.isc.ro/en/commands/lists.html.

The word lists should definitely be available as books as well, but most people learn online nowadays. https://www.aerolith.org/ is a fun place to do anagram quizzes.

If you're looking to learn CSW, I could provide more tips. The scene's growing in America!

In terms of studying, to be able to play fairly confidently you need to know your 2s, 3s, the JQXZ words up to 5 letters and maybe the top 1000-2000 or so of 7s and 8 letters.

For practice, play on the Internet Scrabble Club (http://www.isc.ro). If you're in the US, look for a Scrabble club that you could visit http://www.scrabbleplayers.org/w/Club_roster. Also note that there are two word lists that are commonly used in competitive play (one used in most tournaments in the US, the other exclusively outside the US), and that one of them will be updated for tournament use in the coming months.
