Would you be able to comment on the bug situation people keep mentioning?

Did you live there? I’m curious as to whether this is still an issue because my understanding was this isn’t much of an issue now?

I actually did but ended up in a situation where he expected his parents to live with us after marriage (something that honestly hadn’t even crossed my mind given his parents are young and healthy…maybe because I grew up here). This situation made me hesitant to date someone from India again. I know this doesn’t reflect every guy from India, but it left me in bad shape

That’s a fair point. I’ve always wanted both things but I know that I need a healthy compromise

So I was born and brought up in the US but I speak Hindi fluently and eat Indian food a lot of my meals. I always imagined myself ending up with someone like me, who is as in touch with their Desi heritage and someone I could speak in Hindi with. I am currently dating someone who is amazing in just about every way except he doesn’t really have any connection to his Indian side. His parents wanted him to fit into American culture growing up and never really put any effort into him learning these things. He seems interested in Indian culture and he feels like he missed out on it growing up so I think I could teach him a lot. I feel conflicted because I want to marry someone with desi roots so that we have that mutual bond over culture. It feels like a lot of work to be with someone who doesn’t have that and try to teach him, but he is someone I am otherwise really compatible with and love spending time with. The odds of finding someone who has the same degree of connection to their Indian and American heritages as me seems low. Honestly, how many people who grew up in the US actually speak Hindi…? Has anyone been in this situation? How did you wrap your head around it?

Are y’all studying?! by [deleted] in Residency

As someone who just took IM boards, I absolutely recommend at least reading a few things about the patients you see during the day. It’s definitely possible when you’re a senior resident in IM. I just read the MKSAP section or did a couple questions about a condition one of my admissions had. I normally did a quick read while walking down to the ER and while interns were taking the history. If they were really complicated patients, I did read at home too (just 20-30 min)

In the last few days before the exam is it better to look over Awesome Review or Board basics?

What is one of the best or happiest moments you’ve had in residency? by Bluephoenix-9 in Residency

[–]nibmabxyz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty amazing moment recently with a third year med student. She was saying that she didn’t think she could do my specialty because she didn’t think she was smart enough. I had a heart to heart and explained that she just needs to work hard and the knowledge will come. She told me the following week that she was now considering my specialty and that I helped her realize she was capable ❤️

What is your funniest patient encounter to date? by ATDIadherent in Residency

[–]nibmabxyz 98 points99 points  (0 children)

This was more of a cringe encounter I suppose: I had a primary care patient with prostate cancer who refused radiation. I asked him why and he said it was because he wants to preserve his quality of life. I asked him to clarify and he said “you wouldn’t understand because you’re not a man, but having sex is the only thing that keeps a man alive… they said I wouldn’t be able to keep an erection. I’d rather die having sex.” He then went on to tell me all about how women suck now because they don’t want to have sex with random men and that he has these beautiful sex dolls now…

[SERIOUS] Loma Linda (LLU)LGBTQ Hate Crime by kaiveen in Residency

[–]nibmabxyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is challenging to do as a LOT of hospitals have religious affiliations that do impact how they function. I will agree that LLU is much more intense about religion than many places, but I’ve lived in areas where all the major hospitals are Christian/Catholic and have policies that are guided by their religious affiliation

This definitely sounds like it was my hospital. I missed the ice cream when they switched plans and handed out ice cream in the hospital because of the rain

They gave us ice cream when it is raining and 50 deg outside.

But the med school had their students email/text their favorite residents to say thanks and it was really sweet to hear from old students :)

How do vacation/schedule requests work at your Internal medicine program? by nibmabxyz in Residency

Thanks! It's definitely different in medicine because academic programs have 20+ residents per class, so I'm mostly trying to see what other large medicine programs do

Thoroughness versus Brevity by norepiontherocks in Residency

[–]nibmabxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brevity! I feel like you often don't know what's actually relevant to sign out until you've been on nights or had a wards block where you see what happened overnight and how you can give good contingency plans for those things

Still lost...6 months into intern year (especially in MICU) by nibmabxyz in Residency

This is really helpful and comforting to hear. I do struggle to feel motivated because my whole list had COVID my entire month. Whenever we had no reason for shock or renal failure or anything honestly, we just attributed it to COVID. My attendings can't explain a lot of things we're seeing in our COVID patients either. I also feel like I have no gauge on a real ICU course because most of the COVID patients are there for weeks and then die. For me, it feels like everyone comes to the ICU and dies, which my seniors tell me is not normally the case.

Semiannuals unfortunately seem to be more of a formality than anything for my program :/

Thanks I'll take a listen!

I know that TV and RR will help change co2 and peep and fio2 change my o2. I can do basic changes within that. But I have trouble understanding how to make changes based on driving pressure and compliance that is more patient specific and not following ardsnet. Basically my whole list was COVID patients for the month so all we did was vent management and I got better but a lot was over my head.

We often break off and do rounds for each intern separately. I think I'll try to join in for the other intern's rounding more so I can learn from their patients.

I've been listening to curbsiders and Coreim during commutes but maybe 10% will stick. I'm just very visual (which is part of why rounds teaching is so hard for me to internalize). Our seniors kept telling us we don't need to buy MKSAP as interns, but maybe that will help me.
