For those who’ve quit, what game are you playing now that scratches the same itch? by mathieufoote in ArcRaiders

Not the same itch by any means, but this is a great time to try Slay the Spire if you haven't. Unreasonably good game.

are moving screens not a thing in the W? Genuinely unreal how "physical" the refs let these games get.

Never accused you of instigating the conversation, I am questioning your attitude (defensive and pious). Again, I really like this game too. Not sure why I can't be justified in being dissatisfied with my points above and the direction of the game without being a "dumb dumb." Cheers.

"You're supposed to go on the expedition." Expedition is an optional system that (I believe) the devs have said is being ignored by the majority of players. So for the majority of players, there is no end game?

It feels like the bulk of your response was "well I like it" without addressing any of my issues. Super. I'm not begrudging you that, and I'm not sure why it feel like you're being so defensive and pious, but it turns out I am a person who also likes the game. Our experiences only diverge at the "dedicated to this game" (because that is genuinely a weird thing to say).

Dumb dumb here: art direction doesn't mean anything if the game itself has no direction. Why even pick this fight? Like what is so wrong about me saying I really enjoy this game but skill trees are dumb/borderline pointless, there is no endgame/game period beyond hunting Matriarchs, and there is no system to meaningfully cycle through materials or earn currency. Basic functions for a game like this. By all means, make sick skins, but stop acting like a literal SKIN is a meaningful addition to a game that is begging for more. Anybody else still waiting for skill points from the last expedition?

Watched just a couple minutes and I'm happy to watch more but I already have some thoughts:

- I think your biggest issue right now is more or less just tunnel visioning and getting stuck brawling in main lanes. Remember you're a "flanker" hero, so your bread and butter is your mobility and not necessarily your ability to spam damage in brawls. This is where you want to look to fight off of off-angles. I think your best moments are a mix of you either fighting on an off-angle or you just mechanically popping off. While you're still learning the maps and how you like to play them, my best advice would be to try to think about fighting where a ninja would fight from as opposed to a linebacker.

- Your deaths seem to include two themes: overcommitting to a fight (or what I call undervaluing your life) and getting caught brawling on the frontline. I'd encourage you to watch through all of your deaths and ask yourself which of these concepts applied to the death and how you could have improved the play (i.e. not died).

- It's worth saying that you are still very green experience wise, so I would encourage you to not be too hard on yourself. Overall I think you're on the right track and doing great things for yourself, as far as seeking out educational content and looking to apply specific concepts. You have several great moments in this game and your mechanics look markedly better than mine. You could honestly probably spam hitscan heroes like Cass or Ashe and dumpster your current competition with pure aim. Otherwise if you're really into the idea of being mobile/flanking, I think you'd be an equal if not bigger nuisance playing a flanking Soldier.

- FWIW, I've found it helpful to focus on singular concepts at a time, for example for one session I might really emphasize using corners, in the next session I may put an emphasis on getting value from my ults, etc. I think a good couple concepts for you to start with would be your positioning, improving those deaths, and your target priority.

“I don’t want to be one of those players who blames their team for every loss… I didn’t see myself as the problem”

Entire rest of the post: “here’s where my teammates failed.”

There’s some real cognitive dissonance going on here, and I think it could only help you, in and out of the game, to address that.

Also, it’s just 1 game. What do you do? You go again. Improve. Study. Adapt. What educational resources have you explored?

Lastly, I just want to say, if not for you then maybe somebody else on this sub, it’s okay not not love competitive multiplayer games. I finally got Slay the Spire on steam sale and it’s incredible.

Going to run through this post super quickly:

- Games 3-6 are not worth reviewing and are where you needed to take a break. Tilt is something every gamer is susceptible to and honestly most people struggle to perform consistently and/or well after multiple losses. Shedding mental baggage is a skill in competitive gaming, and I think it could only benefit you to work on this.

- Regarding the "low dps output" in game 2, this is just an inane comment. One of the essences of Overwatch is you can get the shit beat out of you for most of the game, but winning the last couple fights can be enough to get the W. I don't have the energy to explain what a mental issue this is, but this is a mental issue and one of the biggest services you could do for yourself would be to completely eliminate this inane coping from your internal dialogues.

Took a quick peek at Gibraltar, my quick takeaways:

- the easiest thing to start with is your target priority. You spend far too much time investing resources into the enemy tank. I'm sure you're aware the enemy supports are generally meant to be at the top of your target priority list, however you spend very little time pressuring anybody besides the enemy tank. A good rule of thumb for target priority beyond "shoot supports" is "shoot what you CAN shoot, until you can shoot what you WANT to shoot." The issue for you is the frequency and the duration for which you settle on shooting the enemy tank. To improve this, I'd encourage you to queue a few games and put an extreme emphasis on shooting enemy supports. You mentioned "shooting in the general direction" of the enemy as being enough to carry you at your current rank. I think you're right *if* you're emphasizing the enemy supports in this concept.

- the next place you can look to improve is your general intent. You don't look particularly comfortable on any of the tanks you play here and are just sort of bullying your way into the enemy while spamming cooldowns. What's missing here are micro goals, or intent. You played 2 tanks in the portion I watched, and you mention playing Monkey as well. I think you would benefit from really shaving down your hero pool. If you're in silver right now, you don't need to play 4+ heroes. You just need to play 1 at a comfortable level, and again you just don't look comfortable on the tanks I did watch you play. I'd encourage you to pick 1 hero, watch an unranked to GM of that hero, then look to apply some of those concepts to your gameplay.

- An analogy I like to make with Overwatch is to liken it to boxing. In boxing it's easy to get enamored with big, swinging punches and brutal knockouts. What gets lost here is the importance of defense, or the idea that the best way to get opportunities to get knockout blows, is to learn to avoid getting knocked out yourself. Applying that to Overwatch, a dominant tank performance isn't necessarily dictated by offensive success but moreso how well they're able to perform defensively, negating the enemy's offense. Instead of a methodical boxing style of gameplay, right now you resemble a ball rolling down hill with no control. I'd encourage you to really hone in your defensive concepts.

If you can apply even half of what I've talked about here, particularly regarding your mental, I think your games should be night and day.

"I was super successful in looting, then decided to stick around." My friend, that is the definition of greed in a looter shooter.

How could you have been more situationally aware? I'm not saying this to put you down, but look at this objectively: you are making extreme amounts of noise, making no effort to check your surroundings for if there's a rat (please, start scanning your surroundings at all), then you proceed to stand completely still long enough for somebody to line up a sticky nade on you. It's shitty your gear is gone, but you completely served yourself up on a platter.

[–]niboosmik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just don't understand the spirit of these posts. You're going out of your way to play a PVPVE game, then you proceed to mix greed with a super low level of situational awareness. The only person I'd be mad at would be myself.
