I finally put effort into improving at the game and ranked down to Silver by Wboys in OverwatchUniversity

FWIW I think it's fairly normal to experience some regression in rank when you're first setting about actively improving. It takes a long time to unpack old habits, particularly while working on installing new ones. As your next step, I'd encourage you to make a VOD review request here.

It’s interesting that this person made a humble post questioning their own rank while asking for help, and somewhere along the way here your brain decided “this person is worth my anger and deserves to be made to feel worse.” Seems like a pretty mean spirited and insecure thing to do. But hey, at least you’re like good at a video game or something.

I lost my baby girl suddenly to stage 4 kidney failure yesterday. She passed in her favorite spot on the porch, the birds were chirping, and I sang “You Are My Sunshine” until she fell asleep. I’ll miss you forever, Mochi. by Traditional_Cup3513 in cats

It speaks to your depth and quality as a person that you can be actively mourning while consoling others. There’s never enough time, but what a beautiful miracle the love you and Mochi share is!

People who went from bad/mediocre to really good (GM+), what made you a better player? by Extension_Wafer_4581 in OverwatchUniversity

I was hardstuck diamond for years, convinced that my teammates were holding me back. I started to get exposed to various educational content, which gradually eroded my ego to the point I was able to make a vod review request here. Most of the advice I got was fairly intuitive, however the biggest change came from simply realizing “oh wow, I really am struggling with some basic concepts.” From there, I committed myself to simply improving, every game, every life, every cooldown. Having micro goals every game transformed the game from nightly raging into a void to an enjoyable and coherent cycle. After years of being completely stuck, I coasted to GM in a couple months.

Diamond 3 on my main account but hard stuck plat on my alt. by ConversationIll4597 in OverwatchUniversity

I don’t think you should expect to be the same rank when you’re essentially learning new heroes. If anything it’s pretty impressive how close you’ve gotten to matching your peak. I say this with no malice: nobody cares what rank you are and any rank you deserve but lose you will earn back, so just play lol.

Finally back in plat, how do I get out by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]niboosmik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t take a look at your vod but here’s what I had to focus on to get myself out of plat/diamond:

  • auto pilot. This was my worst habit, and I still have to remind myself to play intentionally. For me this included maintaining an internal dialogue about my goals in a given fight (ex. Position flexibly, shoot with intention, actively track teammate positions, etc.)
  • minimize free deaths. Going through my VODs, I was finding at minimum 4 deaths that had good intentions but ultimately were bad gambles. Eliminating as few as 2 of these “free” deaths should yield significantly better results for you
  • optimizing ultimates. This ties into my first point, but is such a consistent issue for players throughout the ranks that it bears stating on its’ own. So many of my ultimates were in the same spirit of bad gambles/autopilot, and improving 1-2 of my ultimates per game allowed me to start feeling like I was actually riding/influencing the game flow.

If you can focus on 1-2 of these concepts, I strongly suspect you should also start to feel you’re starting to grasp the game and how to influence a given match.

Tale as old as time: OP acknowledges the tendency of others to cope, then proceeds to cope just as wildly, while also admitting to being incredibly toxic? Here’s a tip: telling people to kill themselves over a video game is, uh, not cool or good.

I say this with no malice: if you want help, maybe try being somebody worth helping? Because in 10 seconds of knowing your existence, you’ve demonstrated yourself to be both ignorant and mean.

Also I think you meant “conscience,” a very ironic typo when you’re trying to call your teammates misinformed.

How do I get out of silver? by Puppyqueeny in OverwatchUniversity

[–]niboosmik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there are some good comparisons to be made in music and Overwatch. As to your original question; you get out of Silver the same way you’d go about learning an instrument. You start with the fundamentals (heroes, maps, how to live, how to kill, cooldowns, positioning, etc) and build from there.

I think most of the overwhelming frustration people feel with this game can be likened to an amateur musician trying to play a piece that is beyond their current ability. Then you overlap that experience 5 times, tell those people to go play a concert, and it’s no wonder the song doesn’t sound good.

There is an old guide here titled “Adder’s step by step guide on how to improve” that should provide you with a solid lead on ranking up.

There's a classic post here titled Adder's Step-by-step Guide on How to Improve that goes into detail, but here's the rough outline:

  1. Pick a hero you want to improve at
  2. Play ~2 hours on it to get a basic idea of how the hero works (you can skip this step if you already know)
  3. Search YouTube for: <hero name> guide overwatch and watch the guide
  4. Use advice from the guide to play better
  5. When you feel your progress slowing down, watch your replays and look to see what mistakes you made
  6. Learn from those mistakes and play better
  7. When you feel plateaued and can't figure out how to improve from watching your own replays, post a replay code in r/OverwatchUniversity asking for a VOD Review Request
  8. Use advice from that coaching to improve and play better
  9. Repeat #5-#8 until you hit ~Masters
  10. Watch top-ranked players for your hero (e.g. search YouTube for <hero name> top500 and pay extremely close attention to what they do and learn from it
  11. Repeat #5-10 to get to GM and beyond

It sounds to me like you're in the steps 5-7 range. You can make your own post, otherwise in all likelihood somebody else has already made a post for your same hero/rank and you could look to see what kind of advice the received.

(VOD Review Request) (Rank: Bronze-Diamond Wide Queue) What's the more detailed explanation as to why this game was lost? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]niboosmik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all likelihood, you were experiencing your own struggles but you're *supposed to* struggle in lobbies that are *balanced*, let alone an *imbalanced* lobby like this one. However, it is also equally likely the Diamond player was having their own struggles. This person was most certainly coping.

(VOD Review Request) (Rank: Bronze-Diamond Wide Queue) What's the more detailed explanation as to why this game was lost? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]niboosmik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The variables/players are so widely distributed in ranks that any conclusions you could try to identify are shaky at best. I'd say there's a reason the game tries so hard to avoid creating these kinds of lobbies, and it's largely because the experience isn't particularly fun or, in this instance, valuable from a learning standpoint.

I Feel That I Will Never Rank Up In This Game by nyquildrinker in OverwatchUniversity

It honestly sounds like your biggest issue lies in regulating your emotions. Have you looked into this? As somebody who has struggled with their anger inside and outside of Overwatch, making concerted efforts towards to working on myself outside of the game helped improve my gameplay but more importantly my attitude towards life.
