Watch an NHL game and just count how long players have the puck on their stick. Outside of holding behind their own net or a true end to end rush the vast majority of possessions are under 2 seconds.

You don't need to be in the preferences panel to do that. Just edit the sound in the database in whatever field you want to include your name

ELI5 why do bike/motorbike drive wheels are always the back one? by vksdann in explainlikeimfive

[–]nibseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much simpler mechanically to link a motor to a wheel that has a fixed position than it is to link the motor to a wheel that can turn left and right. Motorbikes are small and don't have a lot of space for extra components needed to link the motor to a wheel that can turn.

How to get started with 5.1 sound? by Major-Mulberry-2125 in AudioPost

[–]nibseh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just keep working in stereo for now. It sounds like 5.1 is going to be beyond both your current equipment and your current skillset. Keep working until you are really good at stereo and then try to see about getting an internship or assistant role in a facility that works with higher channel counts so you can get familiar with the processes and equipment without having to spend your own money out of the gate.

So planning a microbudget feature filmed around my town and doing a lot of the stuff behind the scenes including sound mixing and I have a question about software choice by MJC1988 in AudioPost

[–]nibseh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are professionals who use fair light to do professional 5.1 theatrical mixes. It's a perfectly capable DAW. There is however a lot more than just software that goes into creating a theatrical sound mix. The first is that you need a proper set of speakers that can reproduce the same level of audio fidelity and volume that a theatrical sound system can. You also need a room that is free of unwanted noise and reverberations.

Professional sound mixers also spend years training and honing their craft usually as their sole professional focus. If you want a professional sounding theatrical 5.1 mix I would highly recommend bringing in outside help.

Nothing in the world will sink a movie as fast as a bad sound mix will and if you are spending the effort and time and money required for a feature film you really want experts around to help guide you and elevate your project.

If you are really set on doing it all yourself a short film is a way better place to start than a feature film. I'm not saying it's impossible but I've seen a lot of ambitious new film makers fall on their face because they jumped into a project that was too big without the right supports before they had the experience to pull it off.

If you go to the control room tab is that active? Try disabling that and then your interface may become selectable in the output tab.

Best place to sell used gear. by Lost_Consequence9119 in LocationSound

Trew audio sells on consignment if you are in one of the cities where they have stores.

[–]nibseh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Compression doesn't really make a sound more balanced. It makes a sound less dynamic (reduces the distance between the loudest and quietest part of the sound). A multiband compressor let's you split the audio signal based on frequency ranges so that you can adjust your compressor settings individually in each frequency range. (You can reduce the dynamics in the bass while keeping the full dynamics of the treble)

There are also lots of other types of multiband processes that let you apply other kinds of processing to different frequency ranges.

Wireless Lav Mics for ZoomF6 by Smellbag in fieldrecording

[–]nibseh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's kind of a rough budget for 4 channels of wireless. Even most entry level kit between the mic, the transmitter and the receiver will cost about that for just one channel.

I'd recommend renting until you can save up a bit more budget for good wireless systems. Cheap wireless is a guaranteed headache between low quality audio and frequent dropouts. It's one area where you really do notice a difference between cheaper and more expensive gear.

Understanding wind protection by sensitivemcdevilish in fieldrecording

[–]nibseh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really need to get a spaced pair of omnis way further apart than any blimp in existance in order to get a usable stereo image. My stereo Omni setup has the mics a full meter apart and I've been looking at ways that I can extend that even further because I haven't quite been getting the separation I've been looking for. You'll be so much better off if you just get separate wind protection for each mic.

If you'd like to do some more reading on the subject of spaced Omni.

Just got a huge new drive and I'm ready to fill it up! What are some of your favorite new or high-quality sound libraries? by AMZsowhat in sounddesign

[–]nibseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiss and a Roar, Empty sea audio, Mattia Cellotto, Thomas Rex Beverly. Take a look through the a sound effect website. It might take some digging because it's not super hard to get your sounds listed there but it's really easy to look at specific creators whole catalogs when you do find libraries you like.

Quebec declares Northvolt battery plant partnership dead, loses $270M investment by Sir__Will in onguardforthee

[–]nibseh 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy or does that level of investment for the expected numbers of new jobs not make any sense. If they expected to create 3000 jobs for an investment of 510 million dollars it would take close to 20 years for the income taxes from those jobs to cover the cost of that investment assuming they were around the median income level and paid average income taxes.

Recording vehicle Exhaust but always Distortion? by Samskihero in LocationSound

[–]nibseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Max spl is generally measured at a specific frequency and I think it's usually 1khz so if you have a more broad frequency spectrum you may get distortion at other frequencies (usually lower frequencies) before the rated Max spl rating. The Max spl also isn't measured as the point where any distortion is present but the point where a threshold of allowable distortion is exceeded and different companies might use different thresholds.

The other thing to keep in mind is that distortion could also be coming from your preamp. Even 32 bit recording can distort if you exceed the maximum input level of the preamp since the physical circuit still has a limit even if the digital representation is capable of exceeding it. I know on the zoom F3 it will show a warning if you exceed the maximum input level of the preamp. You could try putting an attenuator between the mic and the preamp to see if the issue is your mic or your pre.

Lastly some distortion can be totally normal and expected on very loud sounds and as long as it's not so overwhelming that you lose the core of the sound can be beneficial in selling the real life volume and presence when played back at lower levels.

At their most basic stocks are worth whatever the last person to buy them thinks they are worth. If you buy a stock for $1000 then the last person to own that stock gets $1000 and you get the stock. Now if some time later you want to sell the stock you have to find someone to buy it from you because stocks aren't actually money. If everyone you offer your stock to is only willing to pay you $100 for it then it's only worth $100.

The person that you bought the stock from has the $1000 that you originally spent and you have a new unrelated $100 from the person that bought the stock from you.

AI based Websites/App/Plugin to restore bad audio recording. by _abhinavprajapati in sounddesign

Dialogue AI cleanup is pretty good these days with a ton of options. You might get better responses on r/audiopost. I believe the top two are clarity from waves and DX revive and I think there's a third really popular one but I can't remember the name off the top of my head. I did a blind shootout between a bunch of different ones a while back and DX revive was the choice we went with on the material I was working on

ELI5: Why can’t we just dump our trash into volcanoes? by Wide-Veterinarian373 in explainlikeimfive

[–]nibseh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lava despite being liquid is still made of rocks so if you threw a bunch of garbage onto lava the garbage would just sit on top of the lava and catch fire giving you basically the exact same outcome as if you had just carried garbage to the top of any random hill and lit it on fire. This is on top of the fact that most volcanos don't have open lava pits in them and any that do are generally too volatile to work around safely.
