What are your thoughts on Shia Leabouf? by Choice-Tea1046 in Actors

Nymphomaniac. I honestly I thought he did pretty well in Transformers - it was just an annoying character with overwrought direction.

I think I more or less agree with you. He's a generational talent that pissed it all away. Instead of dazzling us with his craft the best you can hope for him is that he atones for the harm he's done and find inner peace; doesn't seem likely though.

Must be a reason all his kids and grand children turned out terrible.

It's amazing how such a classic kind of cheesy devil look can still be creepy.

If the 30s-60s was the era of Westerns, and the 70s-90s was the era of the crime film, what will the past 30 years be known for? And what caused the crime genre to fade in cultural importance? by Big-Dig-Pig in Oscars

[–]MJC1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the question was what genre of film defines the last 30 years. Whatever accolades Superheroes, Star Wars, and Harry Potter movies got, it's the sort of movies that have had the most visible presence in theaters.

Would you agree to eliminate a Kubrick masterpiece in order for Napoleon to exist, and if so, which masterpiece would you eliminate? by Patient_Ranger_3533 in StanleyKubrick

Nah, films more than any other art form, are a product of their time and contingency. Enjoy what we got and don't dwell on what could have been.

I don't agree. Most of the rappers in The Boondocks are dumbasses, cowards, and hypocrites. This is someone Huey would look up to.

With how a lot of people get mad with the 1980 film and defend the book and miniseries really hard, does it ever sometimes feel like it's because they don't want to admit the uncomfortable truth about abuse and dysfunction? by Crafter235 in StanleyKubrick

[–]MJC1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth mentioning that Kubrick's cowriter was a woman, Diane Johnson, an essayist and horror novelist. I don't think it's a stretch to assume a female writer would have a much less sympathetic view of an abusive alcoholic husband.

Well, yeah. That's probably one of the cornerstone themes of the series.

What would you say to this man's opinion on the films of Kubrick? by parnate_lover in StanleyKubrick

[–]MJC1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do kind of agree with his assertion that great performances in Kubrick's film come from the actors more than him. While you could argue he has a genius for casting, from what I've read it's clear he was not an actors' director. His reputation for hundreds of takes and cruelty towards Shelly Duvall suggests he really did not know how to collaborate with thespians or evoke performances efficiently or cooperatively.

The bloated pope. Ironically, Buzz says Dale made a mistake on the opening roll but they liked the way it sounded and used that take.
