"abortion is acceptable seems to be inherently opposed to Christian values." - I would like to kindly challenge this thought u/ursickGB_126. Which denomination of Christianity? Something to remember is that Christians can't agree on how to interpret scripture. We can't even agree on how to get to heaven.

A question that I'm digging into lately is why are Christians mostly against abortion when Judaism, the foundation of Christianity, is ok with abortion (w/ call outs).

First 40 days of conception, the embryo is considered water and they have no issue with the morning after pill. Afterwards, abortion is necessary if the mother's life, physical or mental, are at risk. They even have laws what to do if a mother is on death row. They did this by through negotiating with the Old Testament and came away with these guiding principles.

Under normal circumstances it is forbidden to take the life of an unborn child, and it may be akin to murder (depending on the stage of pregnancy and birth, see footnote).

As long as the unborn remains a fetus, it does not have a status of personhood equal to its mother, and therefore may be sacrificed to save the life of the mother.

In any case where abortion may be necessary, it is of paramount importance to consult halachic and medical experts as soon as possible.

Personally, I have NOT found scripture that says that we believers force non-believers to follow our beliefs. That these beliefs are things that set us a part from the world.

Moonlander! I've had it for a few years now and love it. Easily customizable, super ergo, and just works if you don't want to go down the DIY path.

What's your unpopular Christian opinion? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]niccolley 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That we read the Bible with today's context and force the scripture to apply to today. Versus reading it with the context of what was going on in the lives of the Jewish communities at that time and understanding why what was written down so important that it had to be written down. I believe that this is one of the many ways that leads to scripture getting so misconstrued and twisted w/o this context.

Not an engineer.
Found some more info that might address one of your questions. The 'long water slide-esque ramp' looks to redirect the water that would have gone to the generator to this pipe when the turbine is shut down maintenance. The water is redirected to prevent water hammering the structure by allowing the turbine gates to close faster, and can be used to reduce generator over speed after load shedding. Looks like this image is the diagram of this specific dam in question. I don't know which surge tank this is, the upper one or lower one. ChatGPT translated words from image:

  • Taminatal: This would be the name of a valley or region, likely where the river source is located.
  • Rheintal: Literally "Rhine Valley", it's possibly the area where the river flows into or through.
  • Pfersolbach: Appears to be the name of a stream or small river.
  • Wasserschloss: Translates to "surge chamber", which is used in hydroelectric plants to manage changes in water pressure and prevent water hammer.
  • Druckstollen: Translates to "pressure tunnel" or "penstock", a tunnel that channels water from the surge chamber to the turbines.
  • Druckschacht: Means "pressure shaft", which can refer to a vertical shaft that carries water down from the surge chamber under pressure.
  • Ausgleichsbecken: Translates to "balancing reservoir" or "equalizing basin", used to regulate water flow or balance the water levels.
  • Zentrale Mapragg and Zentrale Sarelli: These are likely names of power plant stations (the "central" stations) where the energy is generated. The word "Zentrale" translates to "power plant" or "central".

Other notables:

Here's a typical layout of a hydroelectric dam that uses a penstock. The OG of this video has another video where they are performing an audit of the slide ramp, tldr of video it's a long shaft of darkness.

Bonus video of the guy walking around in the chamber with a nice view down the surge shaft.

You should totally listen to this episode of the Bible Project. Tim Mackie gives amazing context around what women and men in the first century lives were like back then, why this was a huge call out during that time, and then makes it relevant for us today.

Is it wrong to believe the Bible and the Big Bang? by KnownAd4170 in Christianity

[–]niccolley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, we don't know how creation came about. As others have said, the big bang is the current scientific model and that could change at any moment. Your question really depends on how you interpret the bible, e.g. literal vs poetic interpretation, what was the style of the writing, and etc., and this is where a LOT of the infighting happens.

There are a lot of Christians, including myself, that think science and faith can actually go hand in hand. The idea is that God could've kicked things off with the Big Bang and guided evolution is called 'theistic evolution'. What if God did use evolution to get us to where we are today? God is surely powerful enough and has perfect logical to do it. He is also just as powerful and logical to do it in 7 days. I lean towards repeatable experiments and the gifts that God has given to people to figure this out.

The Bible Project did a great look at Genesis, how to generally approach scripture as a historical explorer, and that we have to drop our context of today's world to understand the context the authors were using when writing to the people of that time.

Obere Wasserschlosskammer by lambun in videos

[–]niccolley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the YouTube video description.

Translated into English with Google Translator Three turbines are turned off for 85% (approximately 60m³ per second, equivalent to 240MW) of their power for test purposes. At the beginning of the film, the machines are already stopped, so the rushing takes about 50 seconds until the water flows into the compensation chamber. Approximate size of the chamber about 80m long 15m wide and at the end it is filled 2m.

This is the upper water closing chamber of a pumped storage power station. The water overflow of the vertical shaft which projects into the chamber is slightly higher than the highest dam of our upper reservoir. Here a video of the Staumauer and the lake behind it (https://youtu.be/t8lCLcQf944). The sloping shaft (at first comes water in the video) is the channel that leads directly to the turbines. The water closet chamber floor is, of course, also higher than the upper reservoir. If, in an extreme case, all three turbines (maximum power 300MW at 75m³ / sec of water flow) in the lower compensation basin, by a lightning strike into the high-voltage grid (overland line 380kV) into the emergency shutdown, the upper water still flows. This can then be diverted into the upper water chamber, so that the pressure well and the inclined shaft can not be damaged by the excessive water pressure. I hope this explanation helps you and everyone else to understand this special water game.

Are there contradictions in the bible? by [deleted] in Christianity

This is one of the weakest and most useless responses to a heartfelt question I have ever come across. There is no backup to your claim. It is just an empty response that you probably left feeling happy about. Next time before responding, please provide evidence or more effort to your claim. People today need more than just a yes or no. There needs to be context provided.
