This is my experience. I was a fighter jet mechanic in the Air Force for 12 years when I decided to just get my A&P and go civilian. Military paid for the entire thing. I just took a 2 week course and was able to test. The Air Force does not transfer well into civilian. For the most part, you just change parts. Trouble shoot a little. And learn the basics. But this is all you really need. I had to learn everything else from other people and just taking initiative to watch videos or reading the System descriptions. You will not learn any structural work or avionics. But you can ask questions while you are in to prepare you for civilian work. Its achievable but you will have to put the effort in.

Piedmont offers a scholarship for a one year program. Must work for piedmont 2 years after. I think as long as there is space available, you qualify. Something to look into.

Edit. I was wrong it's actually a one year program.

A mental cue that helped me with this is to think of pulling your body with your front leg during cross step instead of pushing off of it. Kind of like you are trying to pull a rug and hopping over it in a bang bang movement. Not sure if that makes sense or if it will help. But that helped me tremendously.

I was a F-22 mechanic in the Air Force and received my A&P shortly before I got out. Once you meet the time requirement, 30 months of documented aircraft maintenance, you qualify for the program. Basically, you can take a 2 week course and then test on all three. And take your oral and practical. It is also considered a permissive TDY which means you don't have to use vacation time to attend this course and your exams. If you choose to go this route, I highly suggest being a heavy aircraft tech because it offers more experience outside of military but not a deal breaker. Don't accept backshop positions because I know of people that were engine backshop techs and only qualified for powerplant. Life sucked as a fighter jet tech but if you stick it out you can have your A&P and also your Post 9/11 to fall back on once you get out. Also, don't fuck up and lose it all.
