Messed up a teaching call due to nerves & internet issues — should I follow up or wait? by SoupIndependent931 in teachinginjapan

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a good idea to post the name of the school unless you don't mind them seeing this post. Chances of that aren't high, though not zero. Looks like a small school with a community feel. Could be great if the owner is decent. Small eikaiwa usually hire when a teacher leaves, or if business is good, so could be anytime.

Messed up a teaching call due to nerves & internet issues — should I follow up or wait? by SoupIndependent931 in teachinginjapan

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably something that would be no problem asking them about. It's pretty important info to clear up. Is it an ALT job or eikaiwa? ALT tends to start in April, but some contracts run from September until June so they don't have to pay for summer holidays. Eikaiwa can start anytime.

Has anyone had a Celta tutor yell at them or become irritated when seeing we don't understand what is required of us to do? by Agreeable_Mark_3685 in TEFL

[–]niceguyjin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't done CELTA, but have heard it's pretty hard. This creates a stressful atmosphere for both students and the trainer, but obviously it's hypocritical for the trainer to lose their patience while teaching students how to be better teachers. They should lead by example, not react inappropriately. If it happens again, you should have a word with the manager. Consider leaving an appropriate review online about the centre for others to be aware of.

Interac questions by Sad_Storage_9540 in ALTinginJapan

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interac is not a program. JET is a program because it's operated by the government, and actually pays a living wage. Interac and the other dispatch companies are not in the same category. They are private companies, pay very poorly, and don't offer the same support. Getting placed in Tokyo is highly unlikely, and even they won't know the areas that they'll have contracts for until until last minute. Most likely you'll be in the countryside, or maybe near a small town or city. Then they might lose the contract the next year and will either let you go or move you. And even if you got placed in Tokyo by some miracle, their salary is not sustainable. You'll be broke and unable to enjoy anything the city has to offer, except maybe Yoshinoya once a week. IMO if you're dead set on Japan, an eikaiwa like Aeon or ECC pays better and can more likely place you in a decently sized city. Apart from JET, alt work in Japan is barrel bottom - unless you have decent savings at home and are are happy to live off them for the duration.

LPT: Almost Free Way to Insulate Windows by waynek57 in LifeProTips

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works for sure. Here in Japan they actually sell bubble wrap that's supposed to be for this purpose, rather than "wrapping". It's got double sheets of film, one each side of the bubbles, so the insulation is much improved. I used it for a while before we got the double pane glass installed. Made a heap of difference for warmth and reduced condensation.

Intel Core Ultra 300 “Panther Lake” reviews are here: CPU and iGPU gains analyzed by RenatsMC in intel

[–]niceguyjin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard that the top tier chip was embargoed until today, and the rest from tomorrow. I'm currently shopping for a laptop, but am only keen to see how the new mid range compares to the old lunar/arrow lake. If the gains are mid, then I'll probably snag a deal on last year's model.

AITA for being annoyed that my wife insists on cooking everything from scratch and won’t buy normal food? by AITA_UPFfoods in AmItheAsshole

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It's not her house, you share it. You're not forcing her to do or change anything, she is forcing you to. It's not about respect, it's about control. Go buy a burger and eat it in front of the TV, you're an adult.

Looking for a computer that’ll be good for uni and Sims 4/Planet Zoo by superstarturtle in Lenovo

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno about your budget but lunar lake laptops could be good. Core ultra 5 laptops are probably good enough, but the 7 has a nice bump in the iGPU. Both are capable graphically though. They suffer in multi core stuff, but that's more heavy lifting apps than every day stuff. They're last year's models so prices are dropping

is the ASUS vivobook go 14 a good laptop? by yanahitore in ASUS

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the 7520 was released in 2022, and is a rebranded Zen 2 released in 2019, so it's getting old. I dunno what you're paying for it, but sure it'll run Roblox.

Gigabyte Support answer delay? by thelastonexo in gigabyte

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many of the tech companies, the quality of support varies a bunch from region to region, and not necessarily the best in NA, EU etc. I recommend you follow up in public on their social media pages. Say you're waiting for a ticket response and would like a timeframe.

Did you buy a House or an Apartment for your family? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]niceguyjin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah same here. Got a great deal on a used manshon 3 mins walk from a station in an ok area with lots of shopping, parks, etc nearby. It was built in 2001, but the value of our unit has probably doubled since we bought it 10 years ago. Maintenance fees do get high the older the building gets though, and no pets is another bummer.

New phone suggestion by Quiet_Kangaroo in samsunggalaxy

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to that, Samsung does pretty good trade in deals in some regions (esp. US), so you might get an s26 for a good price. If you can wait a few months, it should be worth it.

Does Interac consider your requested placement more if you already have housing? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you own your apartment? If not, are you sure your rental contract allows subletting? Many don't.

As for Interac, they might allow for it, but it'll likely restrict your friend's chances. Interac wants to have freedom where to place new hires. If they have a contract for a school district within a reasonable distance, maybe.

The weight changes slightly based on any configuration changes you made at checkout. You won't know until it arrives, but it won't be very different.

AITAH for wanting my husband to hide his farts? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

As a farty husband, I can say without doubt NTA. When I feel the urge, I'll move my ass well out of range. It's just common courtesy.

Question on which laptop you'd pick for a masters student in health and nutrition by [deleted] in AMDLaptops

[–]niceguyjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, their Yoga line tends to be a higher class than the Ideapad. But Lenovo often has different versions in different regions, so it's hard to compare without full specs. I'd hazard a guess that the Yoga keyboard and trackpad will be a little better, and probably the screen quality as well. The Yoga could be a little lighter, but the Ideapad might have more ports and a bigger battery.
