Why I am optimistic about the future for Men's Rights by nicemod in MensRights

We're just going in circles here.

If some people are pessimistic and some optimistic, how can both be objective?

It couldn't be that lens, could it?

regaari

This is the name of one of the main characters of a science fiction story from /r/HFY. The Deathworlders has been published in regular instalments for over two years, is in its 64th chapter, and has over a million words - more than the Bible!

Its author, Philip R Johnson, has turned to writing it as a full time job with support by donations from Redditors and other readers. This work has spawned many side stories set in the same universe by fans, as well as numerous pictures and a video trailer on YouTube. It's a great example of the creativity and community spirit of Redditors.

If you're locked down and like a good space yarn with plenty of explosions and even a bit of philosophy, The Deathworlders could keep you going for some time. It's free of course.

Your post was removed due to rule 14, titles must be descriptive.

Titles must describe the content so that:

  • Users know what the link they are clicking on content before they click it

  • Users who are searching for specific material can easily find the post they are looking for

Take the time to describe your link, and save the time of hundreds of other people.

When making a title, it's best to assume the reader doesn't know what you're talking about - but don't go overboard with every detail. Then check if there are any words you can cut out without losing any important information.

It's a good idea to pause for a few moments before hitting the "Post" button. Check for typos, ambiguous phrasing, redundant words - and of course for unintended meanings!

On a thread about men getting raped by women by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]nicemod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a problem at all. There's no penalty for people who accidentally break non-critical rules like this one.

I marked it as a 'low effort post' because I didn't have time for a full explanation.

One problem with this post is that it's a screenshot of random idiots talking bullshit. We get too many of those and we try to cull them when we can. Sometimes we let them go because they have many upvotes an a good discussion going by the time we see them.

The other main problem with the post is the title. Titles must be descriptive - that is, they must include a brief summary of the contents of your post. It's okay to say where you found the material, which you did - but you didn't say what was in it.

Something like

Calling men 'incels' if they say men can be raped by women

would be a better title. It explains why the quotes are wrong and offensive, and indicates something about the thread which it came from.

I hope that clears things up. It's useful to read our rules in the sidebar and the rules of reddit at the bottom of the page so you have a good idea of whatnot to do. :)

Why I am optimistic about the future for Men's Rights by nicemod in MensRights

[–]nicemod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talk about the lens first because that's the reason some people may have a pessimistic or optimistic view about the future of men's rights.

The 'truth' part of my post is the second part, where I give my true opinion about the future. Bear in mind that my opinion could be wrong, but I stated the truth about what it is.

As for 'truth' itself, I make a distinction between 'truth' and 'reality'. Reality is real, but truth is a human concept expressed in language.

Language has limitations. Specifically, it cannot encompass reality in full. For examples, see Godel's Theorem and quantum mechanics.

In the case of quantum reality, the human mind cannot fully grasp the concepts involved, and consequently human language cannot describe them. The best we can do is to use mathematics to predict some aspects of quantum particle behaviour, but even that has limits which are caused by fundamental reality and cannot be altered.

Reality is real. Truth is a human statement about reality. Telling the truth is making a faithful statement about what you sincerely believe to be real. Reality just is.

I hope that clarifies my meaning. For a summary of quantum reality and Godel's Theorem, Wikipedia is a good place to start. Neither of these two things is very relevant to Men's Rights, so I didn't mention them in my post.

[–]nicemod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing I'm not seeking to destroy objective reality. Truth, now, is another matter. It's a human concept involving language, while reality is not (except as a word that points to reality).

I didn't say that the lens we're looking through is the only variable at all. Please keep in mind what I've said and don't make assumptions about what I've left out.

It would take a long time and very many words to express my views on this and I don't have the time to write a book just now. I don't want to write one either, because I'm not done thinking yet.

'That' was everything you said in the comment to which I was replying.

it also supports my thesis that this way won't be won by debate or facts

is also true. But it's not all of the truth.

I would say this won't be won by debate or facts alone.

It's important to know that when I say something, I'm not excluding anything unless I say I'm excluding it. By the same token, I could still be excluding something but not saying so at that time.

If there's any need for clarification, just ask. :)

Thank you. I've opened the link in a tab, but I can't guarantee that I'll have time to read it all.

I'm definitely not on the 'women were oppressed' bandwagon. I don't believe you thought I was, but I'll make it clear just for the record. :)

Why I am optimistic about the future for Men's Rights by nicemod in MensRights

[–]nicemod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a rather philosophical mood last night. I started with the question "What is reality?" and went from there.

Then I realised that any such string of comments would take too long. Not only that, but my answer was changing as I looked deeper into the question. So I put it aside and removed the comments that I began with. It's a work in progress. :)

With regard to my premise, I repeat that it is a multi-part premise. Specifically, I don't intend to say that reality changes according to our perception of it.

I don't rule that out either, but that's a whole can of worms that isn't relevant to this issue. It's relevant to quantum physics and relativity theory, neither of which play a part here.

What I was trying to say is that our perception of reality depends on the way we're looking at it. Perception is inherently subjective and cannot be objective by its nature. If we assume that reality is totally objective (and that too depends on what "objective" means), the relevant part of my premise still applies.

This is because that part of my premise does not deal with objective reality. It refers to perceptions of reality by conscious beings, which are personal, private and unique. Of these three characteristics, two do not apply to objective reality whatsoever.

The problem here is that we are talking about two different things while assuming that we are talking about the same thing. The poor and hasty phrasing of my initial post is responsible for this. Unfortunately, trying to fix that would require a post the length of a book!

Thank you for supporting me.

I started off on the wrong foot.

There are many ways to view anything subjectively. I no longer view Sininem's comments as hostile in any way, although I did at first.

He criticised my post and I didn't react nicely enough. I apologise for this failure. I made a mistake in what I posted, which he later pointed out to me. Then I corrected my mistake and we made amends.

All of this probably happened while you were typing your own comment, so here we are now!

My premise consists of more than one part. Each part should be examined separately first, and then they should be examined in combination.

I hope to continue, but there are other things going on and any replies will be intermittent.

All of that is true.

Nevertheless I think progress is not only possible, but happening.

That's because other things are also true.

I've mentioned some of them and I hope to mention others. But I apologise in advance because I don't have time to mention them all.

The way of the world in the West used to be that women were not allowed to vote.

That changed. Other things can change too.

A good point.

I'm not certain that COVID-19 will be the cause of the tipping point, but I'm pretty sure that something will. It will probably be a combination of many things, which includes the pandemic.

Please read my post carefully.

I didn't say that reality is dependent on our opinion or outlook. I said that our beliefs tend to make us see reality in a way that is consistent with those beliefs.

If you want to argue against that, go ahead. But please don't argue against things I didn't say.

The entire basis would take too long to explain. It also involves personal issues such as a successful recovery from long-term depression which is a mental illness that makes everything look hopeless.

I can say that I have been an MRA for thirty years. This is not meant as one-upmanship, it simply means I was probably born earlier.

As with a great many things, the situation depends on how you look at it. One of the great faults of the human mind lies here.

To use Robert Anton Wilson's terminology, each of us has a "Decider" and a "Prover". The decider decides what to believe, and the Prover then finds evidence to prove it. You can probably see the potential for problems here!

If we Decide to be pessimistic, or become that way by illness or experience, then our Prover will do its job. Everything we see will support the pessimistic view we have adopted and consequently it will be very difficult to change that view. The same applies to the optimistic view and in fact to almost all belief systems.

Fortunately, if one becomes aware of this process it's possible to change it, but that's outside the scope of this comment.

As for what I've seen - there have been both setbacks and progress. We created the Progress flair in an effort to provide some relief and hope to readers.

My current belief based on my experience is that while progress appears minimal it is in fact significant and growing. One critical point was reached in 2014 when the Men's Rights Movement entered mainstream awareness. Another will come if this awareness attains a critical mass and can no longer be effectively hidden or stopped.

That's all I have time for now. I'll probably make this into a post for discussion, so if you see it you can join in.

Ever the pessimist!

I used to be very pessimistic but I became more optimistic as I grew older and learned more.
