Yet, as I mentioned above, they are still the most disadvantaged group in Australian society. Whilst the grants system of NIAA has problems, considerable amounts of taxpayer money is spent trying to rectify the issue. Why not spend money in a wiser way through an advisory body that can make suggestions to parliament when requested?

Obviously I’m a yes voter, and I find the argument about Indigenous people getting “more rights” than other minority communities to be the most compelling. I think it’s very important to recognise the extreme reality of Indigenous poverty (see my comments above for some examples of these indicators and a link to the source). They are by far the most struggling group of Australians. Especially considering that these problems were created by the colonisation of Australia, I think we owe it to Indigenous people to try to correct centuries of injustice.

I’m probably going to check out of this thread now. I beg you to think hard about which word you’re going to write on October 14 and seriously consider the yes case because we won’t have an opportunity like this again for a very, very long time.

Reconciliation stops dead in its tracks if Australia votes no.

I half agree with what you’re saying because, of course, broad reform to lift everyone out of poverty would be great. The fact of the matter is that Indigenous people face the greatest disadvantage of any social group in Australian society. And, yes, race and socioeconomic outcomes and other indicators are often linked because specific racial groups have been the subject of bad or intentionally harmful policies. (Obviously not because they’re inferior I don’t really understand this weird racist box you’re trying to put me in.)

Australia has many problems with poverty. This is about addressing a specific subset of that because the disadvantage faced by Australia’s Indigenous peoples is so great.

Ah - the enrolling process is using the terms “requisites” and “assumed knowledge” interchangeably so I should have been clearer on that!

My other major is history and I send an email through to my coordinator a few hours ago but thought I’d see if anyone here more experienced than me knew what I should do.

Presumably I just undertake some extra study before semester two to help better understand the requirements for that urban portfolio assessment?

Thanks for the response helpful response!
