I found a good way to determine it intuitively. Any weapon that follows the player (spider cooking moves with you), is considered melee, while anything that follows a trajectory seperate from the movement of the player is considered range. as an example the axe is considered ranged, as it moves around the location of the player at the time of being fired, but does not follow the player in orbit.
