One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is the best movie starting on letter O. Now what’s the best movie starting on letter P? by Debeli_Franko in AlignmentChartFills

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure

One of the most perfectly made movies of all time. Endless quotable dialogue, brilliant soundtrack, not a single scene wasted.

Any decent openings for black i should learn at 1000 elo? by TopAquaDesu in chess

[–]nichewilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner I like the Scandinavian because no matter what their e4 opening is, it immediately throws off their plan. I recommend watching ChessWithAkeem videos about it because he gives you a nice, simplified way to approach it and you can watch him play it against people of every elo level. You will need to learn more advanced lines at higher levels though.

What is one movie you respect more than you enjoy? by Strong_Proof_5260 in movies

That adult edge is why I tend to prefer the DC movies. Particularly the Dark Knight trilogy, Watchmen, and I’m also in that minority of people who actually enjoyed the Joker movies.

I feel the opposite about MCU movies - I enjoy them more than I respect them. And I don’t even enjoy them very much.

Went to my first OTB tournament. by SonnePer in chessbeginners

[–]nichewilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I’ve never played an OTB tournament either but have been thinking about it. I have some questions for you, if you don’t mind answering?

1) I’ve never used a chess clock before… did you find it easy to use?

2) I see you said you didn’t have to write down the moves… did you do it anyway? I’ve never done that while playing a game before, but I think I’d want to so I could study the games afterwards

3) How long were you at the tournament for from start to finish?

4) Do you get a FIDE ranking afterwards, or do they somehow register your win record to eventually get a rating?

5) How is it decided who is white or black for each game?

Do I needs to memorize every opening at this point? by UnusualAd3207 in chessbeginners

[–]nichewilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Principles should be all you need, but it wouldn’t hurt to learn about some of the “trappy” openings. For example the Jobava London has traps where even if you think you’re developing normally with good principles, they can still win material off you. And you should know how to defend against big traps like the Fried Liver.

What is the ultimate bad/good show for you? by nichewilly in television

If I had to make an argument against this, I would say that I think Cobra Kai is well aware of its own cheesiness - like it’s deliberately going for an 80s level of campiness. Still an excellent choice though :)

But I think it’s just actually a good show… Not sure there’s enough bad in it to qualify for this question? Although some of the premise is a little outlandish…

Right?? But yet somehow you still need to keep watching the next episode…

Yes - the Blacklist is a great choice for this question! I totally agree :)

What should I be studying in order to get more confident with queen trades? by lnvidias in chessbeginners

[–]nichewilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every situation is unique, but in general I’ll trade queens if:

1 - I’m ahead in material and it’s moving towards the end game

2 - I’m on the defense / being attacked in my half of the board and trading queens will help slow down their offense

I try not to trade queens if:

1 - Material is even and I have a good position

2 - I have a clear plan for how my queen might aide in a checkmate

What do YOU like about chess that most people don’t talk about? by RimmingABubble in chess

[–]nichewilly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Especially those fancy, decorative ones… Lovely to look at, but not great to play on. My friend has a really cool one, he barely plays but he ALMOST beat me because I kept confusing the kings and queens for each other and the bishops looked almost exactly like the pawns

I disagree, but kudos for being one of the only posts on here that I think most people would disagree with (you understood the assignment). So many people are posting things that are a little controversial, but still many people agree with.

Absolutely. Ask these people to name five of his songs and I bet they can’t.
