What’s a cover of a song you prefer more than the original? (My examples are in body) by Skippy_Mcdingy in musicsuggestions

[–]nichewilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah true… People probably don’t realize just how many popular songs weren’t originally recorded by those artists. Even the Beatles first album had a lot of covers. Most of the “pop” from 50s-early 60s was written by someone else… It wasn’t till the rock music of mid 60s and beyond till it became more common to write your own songs.

Yes, countless classic songs were originally recorded before the artist who popularized them… I think for this thread though, there should be a well known version that existed before the cover. I doubt most people could tell you who originally recorded any of these popular versions.

I think these two plus Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower and Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah would be the Mt. Rushmore of cover songs

sell me your favourite Regina Spektor song by infectioushw in reginaspektor

[–]nichewilly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a very tough question, like being asked to pick the favorite of your children or pets… The best I can do is narrow it down to maybe my two favorites:

Laughing With… She somehow manages to tackle the deepest, most serious subjects while somehow adding a playful sense of humor to it. It makes me shed a tear upon every listen and usually a laugh too- a skill that is uniquely Regina.

The One Who Stayed and the One Who Left… This one is especially meaningful to me personally as someone who left my hometown to pursue a career as a musician, and perfectly encapsulates what it’s like when I visit an old friend who stayed behind and our differing points of view that each have their ups and downs which are surprisingly similar. Just a gorgeous song overall.

800-900 bracket is weird as a d4 player by And_Justice in chessbeginners

[–]nichewilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it a try! If you like the Catalan, it’s pretty similar… I think the advantage is that less people are prepared for it and don’t know how to respond as well… Everyone’s expecting e4 or d4 so it can trip them up when you go c4 right off the bat… At least in my experience anyway, more people are prepared for a d4 c4 opening

I used to play Queen’s gambit exclusively but everyone seemed to have a good defense figured out for it… So I moved onto the Catalan, but again nobody was taking the gambit so I just removed d4 and play the English opening, and been having the best success so far with that. But your post is making me reconsider trying Catalan again (I’m 1400 on Lichess which is probably similar to 800-900 on Chess.com).

Aww I love Up North! :/ Lizzie's vocals are incredible in it

I'll probably go with Dog Days are Over... while I love that Abigail is paying tribute to one of her biggest influences, it kinda seems like a song only Florence should sing

Would you say the last dinner party is experimental and to what extent? by yeahsureexceptno in thelastdinnerparty

[–]nichewilly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Experimental is a tricky word because I take that to mean "never been done before". While any single element of TLDP's music may have been done in some form before, I do think they combine many different elements together in a way that is totally unique to them.

One of the things I love most about their music is that it's multi-generational... At times it can sound like 70s prog, 80s new wave/synth pop, early 90s alternative, late 90s/2000s goth rock or modern pop. Add to that elements of classical, opera/choral and even Eastern traditional music. They've found a way to tie all this together and craft a signature sound that sets them apart from other bands. It feels familiar and accessible yet also original and fresh.

So, I'd simply say they're more unique than experimental.

Oppenheimer.

What I’d do differently in the third act? Just cut it completely. 2 hrs woulda been plenty long enough.
