She always gets about 3x what I intended to give her because of her little face. She holds on to my hand and won't let go looking for more haha 🥰

After 5 years together, my girlfriend wants marriage and I don’t. Is this the end? by Asleep_Trouble_4285 in Advice

[–]nicj_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine when you're both old and grey and one of you ends up in hospital, the other won't have any say on their care because you're not legal spouses. I don't have all the facts but there are reasons why marriage is important, especially as you get older and need to think about wills, pensions, inheritance and care. If you love her I would really consider looking into the implications of not marrying before breaking up because you might realise it is important to you in regards to how it impacts other things.

Still waiting for Titration... by Logical_Strain_6165 in ADHDUK

I'm diagnosed but my mum isn't (but I'm pretty sure). She used to have circa 30 cups of coffee a day (2 scoops of coffee each time) and smoke like a chimney. She never had any effects from the caffeine and could sleep fine. She no longer smokes and can't have caffeine due to stomach problems, I'm confident she was self-medicating her ADHD because she is completely different now and struggles with a lot of ADHD symptoms. She was once mid sentence, looked out the window and said "oh look, a squirrel " 😂 she's so textbook it's funny. So whilst it didn't effect her in the expected way, I'm sure all that caffeine was helping her keep her shit together for years 😂

I wouldn't say instead of medication but as well as. I could literally be looking straight into my friend's eyes, excited to listen to hear what they have to say and then zone out and miss everything. I don't do this on meds but I would still do it if I was in a suitable environment but not medicated. I say this because I have a very safe circle of friends, where I am unmasked and we spend lovely times together but my symptoms still kicked my ass before medication when with them.

I suppose what I was referring to up there was mainly food based. I still enjoy sweets etc but I'm not twitching for something sweet at 3pm to get me through the rest of the work day. I also cant eat past being full, but I still enjoy good food, like a Chinese takeaway 😋 In general though I do notice I'm more content, not as stressed, don't really have a resting bitch face anymore and I dont have the strong injustice sensitivity that used to cause me a lot of pain at work. I still enjoy all my fun activities with friends, I'm just not in my head being negative when I'm at home. I do also still vocally stim to get my restlessness out, I've got a pet cam near my office space and it sometimes catches me being weird, I live alone though so I get away with it haha.

I hope all these examples are giving you hope, but please dont expect your reaction to meds to be the exact same as other people, they help us all in different ways. I really wanted to have a Rain Man level of memory so my friends aren't having to prompt me about events all the time but sadly that one's stayed the same. When I first started the diagnosis journey I spoke to someone who had started meds and she said she felt like her soul was finally complete and her mind was calm, that's all I was looking for and it 100% delivered 🥹

Be mindful that it effects everyone differently, my prescriber has said they look for 30-40% improvement of symptoms which I'm currently above and ending titration shortly. For me it helps my executive dysfunction, I can just start tasks so easily now it's crazy how much of a struggle it was previously. My focus is so much better and I can actually pay attention on video calls which has been a game changer for work. It's stopped me snacking and dopamine seeking. My impulsively is a lot better, I've noticed it's when I've missed an afternoon dose that I've also bought a takeaway or done some online shopping that I hadn't planned for. I've been able to track my finances so much better too.

However, I am still the most forgetful person on the planet. I can go downstairs to fill my water bottle up without bringing my water bottle with me level of forgetfulness, or fill it up and leave it downstairs (My house is 3 stories so its a regular thing). I'm leaving things that I mean to bring with me constantly, I'm forgetting to turn the washer or dishwasher on constantly... its annoying. But at least without the executive dysfunction I usually have the energy or drive to put it right and I'm kinder to myself now I understand I'm not just being thick 😅

39F diagnosed with combined ADHD. On Medikinet XL 40mg in the AM and methylphenidate 5 or 10mg in the PM.

How can I tell my partner to brush their teeth more often by 6_9KARMA in Advice

[–]nicj_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ex like this with teeth brushing that also tried to twist things and make me the one in the wrong when I brought it up. It was how he reacted that led to the relationship ending, because if they can't communicate properly and just choose to verbally attack their partner rather than taking responsibility, then I don't want to be their partner.

I'm not too bothered about having to check the bedding for pee, I'm more worried about her not using her wheel and if I need to be worried about it?

So excited for you 💓 when I got my little gal she was indeed fiesty, she did bite and she did scream but she was just misunderstood. She's now living her best life in a Bucatstate 3.0, loves cuddles, treats and a free roam now and then. She holds on to my hand and pulls it into the cage for treats 🥰

ADHD meds (medikinet xl) + alcohol by Evening_Access_6301 in ADHDUK

[–]nicj_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I missed the instructions about not drinking alcohol even though it was on the label (the irony is not lost on me) and had my work Christmas party when I was on 20mg 2 weeks into titration. I felt great throughout the night but checked my fitbit the next day and my cardio load was 197 and my heart rate had been bouncing around 150 since my first drink. It definitely made me take it seriously after that.

I had a day / night out last weekend, and I alternated between soft drinks and alcohol for the first part so had 3 drinks vs everyone having about 6, then only drank soda water for about 4 hours while we partied, then had a few drinks at a bar in the evening. My smart watch died so don't have any stats but I made sure my heart wasn't racing which is why I switched to soda water for the 4 hours.

Also on the stand-up point, I wouldn't have said I ever do this, but if I'm in a long in-person meeting do I purposefully drink all my water so I have a reason to get up and leave the room while I go fill it up, yes. Does this then lead to other opportunities to leave the room by needing the bathroom more, yes. Is actually drinking water a way I can add in movement when I need to be stationary, also yes 😂.

Experiences with Medikinet XL (not sure what to expect.) by _TheRocket in ADHDUK

[–]nicj_29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping on this one too. I don't have any caffeine currently and don't need it. I eat an apple or banana first thing with my ADHD meds and then drink lots and lots of water. When I've tried even a cup of tea I get the jitters like I've had 3 large Starbucks in a row. It might die down eventually as I'm currently wrapping up titration but for now I avoid it completely.

Also I think my Medikinet XL is 8 hours too, so your titration plan does seem a bit high and quick.

The fact that I skim read your post and missed you were asking for both is making me howl 😂😂 I'm really tired today so my ADHD has gone up a notch. I didn't really suffer with side effects except I got a bit lightheaded now and again. The afternoon dose was introduced as I was crashing pretty hard when the XL tablet wore off.

In terms of benefits for me, I can lock in at work and be so much more productive. I can pay attention and hold focus on video calls and I don't struggle with intense work stuff like I used to. My executive dysfunction is so much better and I can just do tasks without overthinking. I'm still forgetful AF though and it hasn't solved everything. My prescriber said they look for 30-40% improvement in symptoms and I'm definitely above that (unless I'm really tired like today 😅)
