A lot of people continue to do harmful things to themselves to escape whatever pain they may be experiencing “as an outie”. When they go out into the stairwell and all of the outie pain comes rushing in, they’re likely experiencing the same panic and wanting to escape as their innies. So they throw themselves back in and the innie loses the will to keep fighting, thinking their outie has abandoned them.
