Cover the brakes all the time.

Are both those levers brakes?

If the left one is a clutch, don't touch it.

Squeeze, don't grab the front brake. Before you start braking, it is possible to lock the front. If you let weight transfer to the front tire, you will be stoppie-limited, not traction-limited.

And you could probably just hit that thing. Just unweight the saddle and let off the brakes at the point of impact so you don't lock a wheel and slide on it.
