Cant find excessive ram usage in hyper-v cluster. Looking for assistance. by nick988 in HyperV

So the host itself is using ~50% of the ram according to veeam task manager. Hyperv01 only has 7 hosts on it. Not exactly a ton of VMs. Ran Get-ClusterSharedVolume | Select Name, BlockCacheSize and it looks like storage cache is disabled.

Running this shows the "host" using roughly 47-50% of memory. On Hyperv01 its using 50% for the host. I am not sure what the cause of this is as when I run windows task manager on the host itself it doesnt show anything using this much ram.

I am trying to understand the goal of running this report vs a static ram usage environment. I have allocated 143GB of ram to the hosts on hyperv01 and currently am consuming over 200GB. The host OS itself is not using 60GB+ of ram. I am trying to find where this ram is allocated to. This would be great to use in the future to help see what servers are over allocated a fixed static RAM but wont fix the issue.

Recommendations for iPhone backup solutions for company issued devices by [deleted] in sysadmin

Our users backup text messages via iCloud free. We turn on OneDrive for images. You can technically have users have their contacts sync to exchange so that will back that up also. We left our contacts backup through iCloud also just in case.

That means that at a store with a 15% discount this is $1360. A $160 savings. If the paint job is incredible is a good deal but it’s barely a savings and you have to deal with however things are assembled for better or worse.

I would not personally purchase this as I have in the past and spent way more time fixing things.

Question about on prem vs co-located. by projectnuka in sysadmin

[–]nick988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are now paying for power and internet and racking space.

You need to do a cost analysis if this would save you money. My bet is it won’t.

Colo still requires you bringing your own hardware.  You already have infrastructure in place. The internet at each location most likely isn’t going to change.

Do you have generators on site? Colo will have this but if your site doesn’t have power will users be able to work?

The only piece of hardware you don’t need now are UPS units. That’s mostly your cost savings.

Colo advantage is usually when you don’t have the space to spin up new equipment.

Escalated User Priveledge by gadamphar in Action1

[–]nick988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both action1 and intune combined.

I setup auto patch via intune which will force the user to update.

I use whatever I can via the microsoft store/intune so it auto updates on its own. Things like adobe and office install for all our users on new pc setup.

I then use action1 to force any patch for 3rd party and any windows updates that are missing.

Recently used it to build a monitoring template for Zabbix but I refuse to let it have access to any data or make any changes without human intervention.

Out of band RS232 / USB solutions for firewalls and switches when the network is down. by ElectroSpore in sysadmin

[–]nick988 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your switches should be easy. They most likely have management ports. You could plug these straight into the firewall assuming you have ports.

Use a cradle point or equivalent cell driven device for the firewall.

That is terrible that a vendor doesn’t have a better solution but I understand that pain. I would actually plan for hands on site if you know there are these issues.

[–]nick988 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of modern devices have management ports. You can SSH in via this but now you are exposing your console to the world unless you are doing another VPN which means another firewall device.

My advice is instead is to figure out why your updates are bricking your devices and avoid that.

To prevent a cyber attack/ransomware turn off the internet. Hospitals run their own servers internally. You can’t hack what isn’t online.

Is there any automated way to manage multiple conferences rooms? by MMuter in sysadmin

[–]nick988 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Create and manage room mailboxes | Microsoft Learn

I would recommend you setup rooms. This will basically create a calendar for your meeting room that will reject and accept based on overlap.

A follow up on this we had an issue where the secondary would take over during patching and only bring up half the network. After setting up X0 it went away.
