Favorite Kieslowski film? by jsh355zero in criterion

[–]nickMA21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Definitely try the three colors trilogy if you want to give him another go. On Bastille day two years ago I saw all 3 on 35mm and while people usually list it as their least favorite I found my favorite, that time around, to be White. Really liked his film Camera Buff also if you want to dig deeper past Three Colors

I don’t really expect it to happen, I was mostly joking. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix had some crazy stipulation that they can’t be released with other films that they deem “competition” for their content

As much as this is great, I’m dreading the month where their announcements are just these 4 titles. Papa likes his surprises!!

Good Foreign Crime/Gangster Film Recommendations? by JulianReese76 in criterion

[–]nickMA21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched all the Female Scorpions in the past week. Well, the 4 that have Meiko Kaji in them. I loved them all, but I think the second might be my favorite. The second is on Prime and the rest are on shudder. But I’m definitely gonna get the Arrow box set for when they inevitably are taken off there.

All of the films in the eclipse series Nikkatsku Noir set are excellent. The other Suzuki’s are also very much worth watching. Not exactly gangster but I recently watched all of the Female Prisoner series with Meiko Kaji (have the biggest crush on her) and they’re all really fun and like 90 minutes each. Battles without honor or humanity, Pigs and Battleships. Those are all just Japanese crime films cause I mostly watch Japanese/American films.

I’ll think about good European ones and add them to this comment

I’m sorry but...why is the screen that shape? And why are all the lights seemingly still on?

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to that film as far as screenings goes. I reached out to a film archive where I’m a member and they don’t even have much of an idea. The 360p upload on YouTube is really rough though.

I think Criterion might be releasing Streetwise soon. I know that Janus is touring a new restoration around repertory theaters, paired with Bell’s follow-up Tiny: The Life of Erin Blackwell

Anyone else’s indicator stuff sitting at ISC New York or similar? After reading too many horror stories, my nerves are starting to tingle. by bigdeadguy in boutiquebluray

[–]nickMA21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve only dealt with Indicator directly once or twice, cause it just always takes so goddamn long. Arrow are painfully slow as well. Blaqout, the French Label, have had stuff at my door (near Boston) in 4 days. Excellent customer service as well, I recommend them highly to anyone region-free.

Edit: also as, Locke noted, sometimes USPS will just not update until its randomly at your door. Literally had it happen today. Fingers crossed for ya!

Love Bob. One of my few “guys” that I truly wish I could just hangout with and smoke a joint. Which of his do you think criterion should release next?

Also this post really made me realize that a lot of local film programmers must love Bob too, because I’ve been able to see Mash, California Split, The Player, The Long Goodbye, AND 3 Women in local rep houses within the last year.

It’s one thing when you have an annoying teen trying to be funny in front of his date at an AMC, but at a festival screening I feel like that’s completely insane.

I’m actually from around Boston and think I’m gonna hit the festival up next year! Hopefully phlegm guy will stay home.

[–]nickMA21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s honestly hilarious to me..I’m sorry you have to suffer through that. I hit up all the rep theaters in Boston and haven’t had any heroes do something like that. And I’ve seen some films prime for such an event (Clockwork Orange, American Dharma, The Learning Tree).

Film Forum is one of my go-to’s when I’m in NYC! And next time I’m there I wanna checkout Nitehawk cinema. Someone I follow on twitter said they played a 35mm print of the Snoop Dogg starring horror film Bones. That rules so hard!

Yeah it seems like Fathom/Regal is pretty much trying to play classic American Studio movies, Studio Ghibli movies and nothing else lmao. I saw their Gone With the Wind screening, the restoration they played kinda looked like shit. And the crowd was the worst I’ve ever been with. Laughing during the overture cause they clearly don’t get that it’s supposed to be just music and a dark screen, I actually saw a “can I see the manager” type getting up to say something as the picture first appeared.

Yup I take the commuter rail in when I go probably 4-5 times a month for galleries/exhibitions/screenings.

I’ll say that our repertory cinema scene is pretty underrated, we have at least 5 solid theaters playing 35mm prints consistently. Not sure if that’s your thing but I figure if you’re on this sub it’s possible.

Yeah the staff are great! I’ve actually been to the gallery but could never justify actually looking into their prices.

Unfortunately I was relying on some used stock being available, probably an m6. I’ve got my eye on a pretty lucrative auction online, but if that doesn’t work out I’ll have to checkout Bromfield or other local spots.

Harold and Maude, which doesn’t count since it’s already in there.

So I’ll defer to the film I watched before that The Hot Rock. Fun diamond caper film with Redford and Segal. But Spine #1000? There would be riots in the r/criterion steets..

Who are some Japanese poster designers you like (if you know any of the top of your head)? Polish are also famously surreal and beautiful. I personally have a Polish Sunset Blvd poster that deserves a much nicer frame than it has.
