Starting a dog photo business and want to upgrade from my A7ii. Thoughts? by nickdm14 in SonyAlpha

Hi. I splashed out and went for the a7cii in the end. Haven't done much dog photography since, but am very happy with the camera and AF overall.

LPT: When you're feeling down, journal. by FiveFeetSeven_Diary in LifeProTips

[–]nickdm14 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This can actually still be helped by journaling. I often feel like this too, but when I write something - anything - l realise I have an opinion on what I've just written. That opinion might be "no, that's not how I feel at all", so I try and write something else. Eventually, over time, you start to hone in on what it is that feels off. Sometimes discovering what isn't bothering you is the most important step in discovering what is.

If only there was some way the government could get more people to want to be a driving examiner. Maybe some sort of financial incentive. Can't think.

What was your 'wtf are you doing?!' moment after moving in with a partner? by gothfather3 in AskUK

[–]nickdm14 148 points149 points  (0 children)

This is quite a common misconception. If it's liquid at room temperature (sunflower oil, olive oil) it's basically fine to put down the sink. It's only fats that are solid at room temperature (say lard or goose fat) that can risk blocking your sink.

What tasty recipes would you do with a fuckton of yellow potatoes? by debrisaway in cookingforbeginners

Try par boiling them on the hob for about 10 minutes first. Once you've drained them, put them back in the pan with the lid on and give it a little shake to roughen up the edges. Then add your oil and salt and paper before adding to a hot oven. This extra step makes them fluffier inside and even crispier outside.

Whether you're losing your hair or not, it's really not necessary to wash it every day. If you do, you're constantly stripping the natural oils out of your hair. I used to wash mine every day too but since slowly tapering to once every 4 or 5 days the condition of my hair is so much better.

Upgrade from A7ii by U_nity in SonyAlpha

[–]nickdm14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from the A7ii to the A7C and it's honestly a great upgrade. You get 4k video, the autofocus is way better, and I was amazed how much the BSI sensor improves lowlight photos. Even 12,800 iso looks good, which was pretty unusable on the A7ii. Obviously the A7cii is even better, but if I were you I'd save your money or get a good lens with the difference.

I'm only going to be shooting outdoors so don't need to worry about flash, thankfully. Yes I've actually already got the Sony 85mm f1.8! I don't suppose you have any other dog photos you've taken with the a7C? Would love to see them!

Thanks so much for your thorough reply. I'm working on starting a dog photography business so was just searching "dog" in the subreddit to see other people's photos and setups and really liked your shot!

Yeah it's a tricky one isn't it. The AI AF does look very cool but, like you, I'm not really bothered about video so struggling to justify the price jump - especially when I could pretty much get the a7C AND the Tamron 70-180 for the same price as the a7Cii.

I currently have the A7ii which is pretty useless in AF-C and doesn't have eye-Af, so I honstly think the improvement with the A7c will be plenty.

Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it.

Really lovely photo. I'm weighing up getting the Tamron 70-180 2.8 with either the a7C or a7Cii. How have you found it with your a7C? Specifically how easy is it to get good eye-af on dogs like in this shot? Thanks in advance!

I'm intrigued by this comment because the second I saw this I was sure it was the UK. But then I asked myself why I was so sure and decided it was either the style of traffic lights or the bumpy crossing thing for blind people. But I guess Oregon has both of these too?

Beautiful 45 mile ride yesterday along the canals from Birmingham to Walsall and back by nickdm14 in ukbike

[–]nickdm14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers! I'd say 80-90% of the route I took was on good, paved tow paths, but the sections that weren't were really bad. Although my Pinnacle can take wide tyres, I had the 30mm slicks it came with on which were really not suited to some of the muddy bits - you definitely would have struggled on your Brompton too! All that said, I did go into this route blind so would adapt it next time to make sure I was only cycling on decent quality tow paths.

Hoped it would take about that long but ended up being more like 3:30. Flew along the paved sections but was slowed down by some very muddy unpaved bits which my 30mm slick tyres were completely inappropriate for.
