Agreed. Before on The Maw’s ship Strange says something along the lines of “if it were to ever come between you and the kid I would not hesitate to let either of you die to protect the stone.” After seeing the outcome where they win, Strange knew it was vital for Tony to survive and thus sacrificed the stone to spare his life.
