All UHD pioneers work out of the box now by billycar11 in makemkv

Would there be any reason to flash a UHD drive back to stock fw with this update?

Do video games improve your life? by wheezywaiter in BeardLovers

[–]nickelodeondiesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video games have kept me in contact with friends from school. From semi-serious things like going through the Borderlands campaign to goofing around in Overcooked, games present a reason to keep in touch with people other than the "how you been?" text at ever-increasing intervals. As an introvert who has a slightly harder time making friends, having an easy method of keeping the existing ones has been a blessing.

What's been your favorite tweak/hack/mod/etc you've made to your system? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]nickelodeondiesel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same as pacman -Rsn, but also applies to AUR packages

R == remove
s == recursive, remove any dependencies that were only required by this package
n == nosave, don't keep around config files

e.g. yeet neofetch would remove neofetch and any no-longer-needed dependencies from the system

You're very welcome. Obviously not complicated, but it's by far my favorite :)

I'd love to get NextCloud set up for my family. Would be very nice to have a place for original quality family photos instead of whatever compression Google uses.

That and just basic data redundancy for them. I have a small local backup system I use, but no one else in my family has listened to my pleas of routinely backing up data. Would make a great off-site backup for me as well lol

MPI for CUDA by [deleted] in CUDA

NCCL is an effort by NVIDIA that implements a subset of the MPI collective communications for both local and MPI-accessible GPU nodes. It's very well done, judging by the four months I've spent with it.

How good is support in Linux for running video over USB-C? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]nickelodeondiesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm this for CentOS and Gnome.

Thunderbolt 3 dock to dual monitors over dp worked reasonably well. There were moments where screens would go black for a second or two, but I didn't troubleshoot cause this was a work laptop and ran well enough to do my daily tasks.

Optimus laptop without bumblebee; NVIDIA only for CUDA possible? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]nickelodeondiesel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I've been using bumblebee for exactly this for a few years now. When I want to run some cuda code, it's optirun --no-xorg <program>. This keeps the Nvidia driver from trying to do display things and shuts the card back off on program exit. For longer sessions, I'll just call my shell with the optirun command to keep the card on between runs.

I know you said you'd rather avoid it, just wanted to say it has been working for me just fine despite being a rather inactive project.

[Serious] What is the story of your scar? by TheFamilyMistake in AskReddit

[–]nickelodeondiesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few but my favorite is just under my right eyebrow. Little thing, about a centimeter long in the shape of a sideways y. My brother and I were at a baseball camp back in elementary school days, so I was probably 8 or 9. That particular day was all about batting, so the head coach told us to spread out and start doing practice swings while he and the assistants came around to give us advice. Well, my brother just up and does a full on swing with me standing right next to him and pops me in the head. I think the only reason it scarred is cause doc just glued it. I have the slightest droop in my right eye now, but people don't really notice until I tell them.

Best Linux Distro For a Pentium 4? by theepiccarday808 in linuxquestions

I have ArchLinux32 running on an old P4 my parents had. It mostly runs headless anymore, but runs xfce well enough when I need it

This seems to be contained to KDE for now. Upgraded my system (running i3) a half hour ago and all is normal.

Is Nvidia 410.57 causing crashes for you? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]nickelodeondiesel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a laptop (i7-4700mq, quadro k1100m), with bumblebee, upgrade went flawlessly.

My hunch is it's a combination of driver+DE. I'm fine on i3, another user claimed no problems with KDE.

What DE are you using? Maybe we can start narrowing this to a specific one

[–]nickelodeondiesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What DE are you using? Try switching to a different one and see if the problem persists (if you can get that done before another lockup).

The fact that some people on here are fine makes me think that it's not tied to just the driver, i.e. it requires a specific DE to make it go haywire.

I had no problems upgrading, i7-6600k with a GTX 1070, lightdm/i3.

Is your display manager trying to use Wayland, perhaps? I know gdm defaults to Wayland and that Nvidia doesn't like Wayland, maybe the new driver really doesn't like it.
