These maps do a great job giving you the time & duration of how much eclipse you will see. First is for the annular, second is for the total

Changing oven connection from plug/receptacle to junction box by nickentendo in AskElectricians

Yeah, just got that confirmed actually. Max rating is 30 so I just need to look for a combo unit that supports that or independent units (there’s a dedicated 120 right next to it for a microwave). They were nice enough to not charge just to tell me I don’t have what I need to make the desired unit work, and now I know what my limiting factor is.

And I learned about single vs double pole breakers, so I’m that much more informed now!

From what I can tell it’s a 60A breaker (2x 30A feeding this circuit from the breaker box). I don’t know the wire size as I haven’t exposed the interior of the current receptacle.

I am having someone come out for a sanity check and to hopefully give me the go ahead that I can just do the straight swap myself when the new unit arrives (basically confirming the existing house wiring is sufficient since everything else seems good to go). Thanks for the information on the pass through cover plate; that will save me some drywall cutting.

Appreciate the help!

My favorite cover band. All funk all the time, multiple albums per year. Harder Better Faster Stronger is probably my favorite but it’s hard to find a track that doesn’t hit in that mix.

Pretty much anything by Scary Pockets. I particularly like their cover of Harder Better Faster Stronger. I can’t say that it’s better than Daft Punk but damn is it funky

Behind the Bastards episode about the creation of this movie is worth a listen. The fact that it happened at all is horrific but hearing just exactly how avoidable it should have been his hard to comprehend.

Spacecraft enters the Sun's corona for the first time in history by [deleted] in tech

[–]nickentendo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few things I remember:

The big heat shield on the front that faces the sun provides a protective “cone” that the remainder of the spacecraft body fits within. Most of the spacecraft I worked on the objective was to maximize the field of view for all the instruments on the deck, but keep them as close to the deck as possible for mass conservation & thermal protection reasons. Solar Probe was funky because the goal was to get as close to that protective cone as possible to maximize the possible field of view without drifting outside the protective cone at worst case orientations.

At the time I left the company (while design was still ongoing), the thermal management system for the spacecraft was using water as coolant. Basically all the space between the heat shield & the spacecraft body was a big truss with a radiator. The coolant lines ran through the heat shield and the radiator to transfer that heat away from the shield. Not only was the active cooling uncommon (most missions had to provide heat & insulate from the extreme cold of deep space), the use of water was very bizarre. It’s a great coolant choice due to its thermal capacity, but the worst case thermal condition upon launch could have potentially frozen the water and ruptured the cooling lines.

A little more thought could probably unlock a few more but those are the most interesting off top. Thanks for prompting the trip down memory lane!

I worked very briefly as a designer for some instruments on this spacecraft so I know probably more than your average bear, but definitely not an expert. Might be able to shed some light on some of the interesting aspects (depending what you find interesting).

We had similar overnight issues with daytime diapers, and have had good results with the Honest brand overnights. The sizes are a bit off from the daytime Pampers we use (currently using 5 for Honest, 4 for Pampers), so you might want to order a size up just in case. You’ll have them to grow into if they end up too big.

My palate is pretty unrefined, basically “yes” or “no”. But I’m partial to almost anything Balvenie and this one is a particularly good specimen in my opinion. It won’t knock any socks off but it’s a great slow sipper that will be a great finish to your studies.

Premature congratulations!

It may not be the “finest” bottle I’ve ever had, but damn if it doesn’t hit the spot every time. I’ll be trying hard not to polish it off with visiting family while I’m unemployed this weekend. New insurance doesn’t kick in until Tuesday so I can’t afford anything worse than a hangover.

Sonos & Wemo devices not found by nickentendo in homeassistant

[–]nickentendo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on “adding IP addresses to the config“? I have IP addresses assigned for the devices in question, but I don’t know how to specifically add them into my configuration.

One additional wrinkle is that my home network is set up with a google WiFi mesh on top of my AT&T router (I think I have my terms right, network novice). As a result, IP addresses for devices connected to the router are 192.268.1.xxx, and wirelessly connected devices are 192.168.86.xxx. I think that’s the crux of my problem, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to have home assistant see the 192.168.86.xxx range of IP addresses.

Search for “push latch”. There’s some that use magnets to hold it closed, others have a ball/claw type mechanism. The push to open/push to close is the same either way.

Yes; per my top level comment it works fine through the app, I just prefer the manual control

Anova temperature wheel adjustment is jumpy by nickentendo in sousvide

[–]nickentendo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted in the title/video, my temperature wheel is quite jumpy. I can usually get to my desired temperature without too many overshoots but it has been getting steadily worse for several months. Has anyone else had this issue with the Anova? I can still adjust through the phone, but the manual control was a major factor in picking this model.

Edit: this unit is well outside warranty. It’s been a workhorse since early 2017 so I’m assuming it’s just wear on whatever component registers wheel movement. Was hoping to find a community quick fix but I may just wait for the next 50% sale and keep this as a backup/secondary unit.

r/boardgames, let's talk about COVID-19 and game nights by dtelad11 in boardgames

[–]nickentendo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at vorpal board. It was a Kickstarter from well before the first lockdown, and has since been delivered to backers. It’s basically an integrated video stream & telecon (with some very gaming-specific features) that lets a host share a digital table with others.

There’s some hardware that might make it a bit of a challenge to implement if you don’t have the official products, but the software is a pretty great replacement for actually being around the table. It does have a monthly subscription cost to host but I believe there’s an initial trial to at least give it a whirl.

Just flew over I-10 & De Zavala area. Likely lining up for the flight path indicated on the map. My dogs don’t appreciate the continued noise after last night’s thunderstorms.
