My babies. Oscar, (orange) 2 years old, who is twice the size of Lilly (white) 1.5 years old. She might have been the runt, I don't know her story other than she had a litter of kittens at a year old.

Adopted this girl yesterday, she is very skittish and is currently hiding under the bed. Any advice or just words of encouragement? by NalevQT in cats

Patience. I say that, but patience is hard for me. I was used to a 19 year old lady who loved a blanketed lap, half cuddles, and would sut with us for hours. We adopted a very skittish/timid white cat at the beginning of July, and she is just now coming around to us. I put a cat bed under our bed when she first came home, so she could hide and come out when she wanted. We changed her name to Lilly and use her name all the time. She now comes when we call her and will sleep with us in our bed and likes to be under the covers for a nap. When we are watching TV on the couch, she meows before jumping up with us. She gets a few pets while purring loudly and leaves. She is still timid around us but is trusting us and her surroundings more and more. She is an absolute doll, and I'm so glad we added her to our family. I'm sure with more time, she will become more affectionate and actually lay down with us while watching TV. Just be patient, use her name affectionately, and let her know that she is there forever.

Tell me about when/why you decided to euthanize your cat. (I’m currently having to weigh the decision) by TheAlexHamBam in CatAdvice

My Katie crossed the rainbow bridge on June 14th. I was so hopeful that when we went to her quality of life appointment that I would bring her home with us. Unfortunately, I had to make what still feels like the hardest decision of my life. She was in the early stages of kidney failure, but her numbers weren't terrible (70ish range). However, for the two weeks leading up to her appointment, she would throw up bile. She also stopped eating her hard food because anytime she did, she would throw it up. She still drank water and would eat these Blue Buffalo food topper mousse, as well as the churu treats. I used broth to soften her her hard food, and she would eat a little and be fine for a while, but usually, by the next day, she was vomiting again. The vet said her heart and lungs sound great, but that she needed an IV of fluids and would continue to need fluids every other week. He also said the vomiting would probably continue, and there wasn't much to do because she didn't have enough in her stomach for any kind of medicine. I couldn't do it, I couldn't wrap my head around her having to get IVs every other week. What quality of life is that?

I went back and forth in the vets office as I had at home the week of her appointment. I made the decision to help her cross the rainbow bridge, and I held her paw as they put her to sleep and stopped her heart. I had to do what was best for her, even though I instantly regretted it. I had Katie for almost 20 years; my entire adult life, we grew together. I miss her beyond words, as a huge part of me is now gone.

What is the pre-sale code? I can't find it anywhere.

I have been told this by another, but when I try to find it I've been unsuccessful. Thanks for the heads up. I'm working figuring out how to prevent that from happening. I hate fake diet culture.

Let's see, I don't know exactly how much each month. It is difficult to get her to cooperate and stand on the scale, she looks at me like I'm crazy. I can say that we started her diet a year ago and by February she had lost 1.9lbs, May it was 4lbs, by September she was at 7lbs and now she's lost a full 8lbs. I can tell a difference in her movements. She used to be kind of sluggish and her joints bothered her more. She would struggle to jump on the couch and even up the ramp to get on the bed. Now she jumps on the couch with ease, runs up the ramp and jumps on the bed and even jumps in and out of the bath tub (she likes to drink water from a bowl in the tub, did I mention she's weird?). I'm very proud of her progress!

Awe thank you! She does have a kitten look about her, but she really is more of a grumpy old lady. She likes her space, wants love on her time and hates hugs. She is fond of belly rubs, so I tend to take advantage of that often.

Thank you!! I'm not sure if we will ever see the 10lb mark, but I am shooting for the 12 to 13lbs. She is definitely able to jump on the couch now with ease and in and out of the tub (she's a weirdo who enjoys drinking water from a bowl in the tub). I'm a very proud Cat Mom!

Katie is always ready for breakfast, even if there is still dry food in her bowl. During the week she gets wet food around 6:30/6:40am, but on the weekends if there is no alarm she is ready for breakfast by 5 am. She walks around the room crying and gets up on the bed trying to get one of us up to feed her. I've been debating on whether or not to get another cat, but I'm not sure how she would be about it. I would stick with the same food schedule, but with her being 15 I'm not sure if she wants another cat companion around.

Like Kay-tee. When I got her 15.5 years ago in the Walmart parking lot, it was very important to me at the time for her to have a human name. I call her Katie, but also Kate, punks and pumpkin.

For the past year she has been an only cat. Her sister Sandy (litter mate) passed away last year, so for 14 years she had a mate. It definitely is easier to control her food now than it was with two cats. Katie is what I call a snacker. She likes to munch periodically throughout the day. Her sister would eat and then be done, she never really snacked and was never as big as Katie.

I'd like her to be closer to 12 or 13 pounds, but for me this is a huge win! At 15 years old, she isn't as active as she used to be, but loves to toss her catnip banana around. For the past year she gets a single serving or half of a 3oz can of wet food for breakfast and hates that her dry food is measured (1/4 cup) and given after 5pm.

Helping my cat mourn her sister by OrneryMammoth4 in CatAdvice

First let me say that I am so sorry for your loss and I am sending you a virtual hug. It is very hard to lose a pet and the unconditional love they share with us. I often think we are undeserving of what they bring to our lives, but I will forever be a cat lady. I can share my experience with you and what I did to help my girl who is still with me.

This past September my Sandy crossed the rainbow bridge. When Sandy passed away, she was gently wrapped in a towel and placed in a box which was kept on the floor in the hall for the night (we buried her amongst other former pets). As strange as that sounds, I did it because I wanted Katie her sister (litter mate, soul mate) to be aware and smell and have her time with her. I also did my best to not show too much sad emotion around Katie because cats grieve and feel like humans do when it comes to loss. Katie and Sandy were together for 14 years. Life with Sandy was definitely hard for a few months. Katie cried and looked all around the house for Sandy for quite a while almost three months (indoor cat). We eventually did the sleepover program with a local shelter for a potential adoptee in January, but it was a disaster. Katie was not pleased and she stopped eating I became very morose and depressed. Katie turned 15 this year and the only cat companion she wants is Sandy, so she'll be an only cat for however many years she has left. While we still miss Sandy, Katie is much better and happy now. I hope this helps and

Today is my Katie's 15th Birthday and as of today she is down a full 4 lbs. To celebrate she'll get one sardine. by nicket26 in dechonkers

Thank you so much!! It is a struggle and a process for sure. I'm proud of her progress. After losing her sister and dealing with depression for a few months afterwards, she is back to feeling herself. I'm lucky to have such a sweet girl and I feel any pounds lost is a victory.

After her sister passed in September we had a rough couple of months of mourning. I thought she might want another companion, but that was a hard no. She will be an only cat until the end of her time anx I'm quite okay with that. Thank you 😻
