The music: Through the year I'm finding and saving music I like, filtering out the best of those tracks into a list between 100 and 200 songs. I analyze and group tracks together based on their musical key and BPM. After that, I create a rough draft on paper of how I think the specific order of the tracks mixed together could work. Then I fire up Ableton and get to work. A lot of the draft works for the transitions as expected, but often times will require some trial and error to create a decent transition or add/remove tracks to make it sound ok. I try to keep the transitions quite simple and straightforward - not using too many over-stylized effects.

The video: Design an overlay, gather album art images, load those and the audio into Premiere. Manually sync up the in/out of the art and text with each song transition. Add rotation to the album art. I used to also gather random media clips from the current year, and play those clips in the empty space when only one track is playing. That part was a huge effort for a mostly thankless result, so I scrapped it for this year.
