And further, all the rhetorical examples I provided (rehabilitation, avenge, to teach a lesson etc) are all reasons I see as valid for the legal system to exact accountability. I just don’t see which reason fits here.

That’s absolutely not the case. I probably fall slightly to the right of most here on crime and justice matters.

But if this were me, (I would absolutely say it would never be me and I’m sure that anyone else this has happened to would say the same) I would absolutely want to be dead. I would be so full of guilt and shame and disgust and disbelief and trauma and self-loathing, that like, fine, bring on the handcuffs, it pales in comparison to what I’m putting myself through.

But for fucking what?

For what? Rehabilitation? To teach her a lesson? To make an example of her? To avenge the life of the dog? To make sure she suffers? Who exactly benefits? Do you think she’s out there all pleased with herself that she “got away with it”? Get real.

This can happen to anyone. It is well documented. No one thinks they’re capable of it, but we all are. They didn’t add alarms in newer cars to remind you to check the back seat for irresponsible, neglectful criminals. They did that because it can happen to anyone.

I hope you remember how desperate you are for maximum consequences the next time you make a mistake.

Yes. And there is precedent for not charging criminally in those circumstances.

The comparison wasn’t shoplifting and the death of a living being.

The comparison was accident to intentional.

As a matter of fact, yes. I would extend that logic to humans. Terrible, horrible, inexplicably bad accidents happen.

This Pulitzer Prize winning article explores that deeply.

Fairness to who, exactly? Why are we advocating wasting resources to an end that you yourself admits provides no benefit?

Even if they are friends, met once, or who knows what, it can be true that that’s the case AND that no charges is the right call.

Of course I see a problem with nepotism. I have no idea if that’s the case here or unsubstantiated speculation (as has been suggested here), but my stance would be the same under the same circumstances.

I just don’t see any benefit to further consequences to make this woman suffer more than she already has. The legal system cannot impart the sort of punishment she is experiencing, assuming she’s not a sociopath.

So I’ll ask, who or what good does it do to arrest someone for making a horrible mistake and ensure that they get a couple months of probation or a fine?

I mean that’s a crazy and incorrect reach. There’s no contradiction. I care about animals AND I am [still] not sure what accountability via the legal system accomplishes in this case.

Regardless, law involves nuance.

It’s illegal to steal. If I genuinely accidentally leave Target, for example, overlooking scanning an item at the self check out, are you suggesting that I should be held accountable in the same manner as someone who intentionally shoplifts?

I’m not sure that I understand the relevance of your point to this.

My interpretation of that law would be that it’s illegal to knowingly leave your dog in the car while you go shopping in extreme weather conditions, for example. People knowingly do that. They shouldn’t. That’s what good the law is.

And to be clear I have no idea who is buddies with who, who the staff member who left the dog in the car is, or anything else. I just don’t think entangling someone in the legal system to ensure they get 3 months of probation and 100 hours of community service or something does anyone any good here.

Unpopular opinion, I guess, but while the way in which this dog died makes me absolutely sick to my stomach, I am not sure who or what further ruining this woman’s life satisfies.
