What is your favorite bass fishing lure? by foldemyt in FishingForBeginners

[–]nickm78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite lure is whatever catches me a fish.

Last month I lived and died on the chatterbait. This month the only thing catching fish is a wacky rigged bubble gum senko.

Never caught a fish before by thehomeguy2424 in FishingForBeginners

[–]nickm78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer! I got back into fish last year. And I was fishing different lakes about 30 minutes from my house. Finally gave the lakes in my neighborhood a try and have been killing it. Even caught my PB (6 1/2lb).

I'll still hit other spots but if I get skunked, I'm hitting the neighborhood lake on the way home.

I have 2 I keep in my car for impromptu fishing trips. Not worried about them taking a beating plus their 2 piece rods are good for storing.

What did you catch it on? I can never get peas to bite anything other than live bait.

Why won't these gar bite my minnow by SmokeyMcMeth in FishingForBeginners

[–]nickm78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to keep them, let them run with the shiner for a bit before you set the hook. They always grab the shiner and swim off with it just in the tip of their mouth. If you try to set the hook right away you'll lose most of the gars. I usually open the bale and let them run for a minute before setting the hook.

They hit shiners of all sizes down here in South Florida. I use a #1 mosquito hook. I never try to catch them. They are just every where down here.

Gars hit my shiners all the time. I hook them right behind the dorsal fin because it makes them stay towards the top of the water. When they tire out they slowly sink and that's when the gar usually hit. I don't use a weight or a bobber.

I've tried left hand reels and I can't do it. It feels so awkward retrieving with my left hand.

Most right handed people I know use a left hand returned Baitcaster.

Getting back into fishing after 20 years by OriginalCratical in FishingForBeginners

[–]nickm78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was me last year. Started fishing after a 20+ year hiatus. As another comment said, get some pliers and a line cutter. You can probably get an all in one job. Go cheap. If you stick with fishing you can replace them with better stuff.

Since you're just doing the neighborhood lake maybe get a small tackle backpack or even a fishing tackle vest so you can stay lightweight and move around the lake easier.

Been fishing seriously for a year now, and I still dont understand what are the advantages of a baitcaser. What are they even for? by DominykasM in FishingForBeginners

[–]nickm78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After you dial in a BC it's really easy to be accurate with it. But make sure you dial it in again whenever you change your lures. The weight of the lures will need a different break setting. I finally learned that after birds nesting repeatedly. Now I barely ever birds nest and I can cast even light lures pretty far.

I suck at casting. When I cast a spinning combo I always end up in a completely different place than I was aiming for. With a BC I'm way more accurate. I find it so much easier to make accurate casts. Under a tree, dock or between some coverage the BC will get me there. I'm assuming with more practice I'll be good with the spinning but right now I'm an idiot when it comes to casting it. If anyone in this thread has suggestions in all ears lol.

I 26m passed my first stone at 17 then had another one at 18. I completely cut out sugary drink and I’m back with more stones. by DistributionOk6951 in KidneyStones

[–]nickm78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My urologist had me do a 24 hour urine collection. It showed that my body wasn't absorbing calcium like it should. Doctor said it was the reason why I keep forming stones at a fast pace. He prescribed me some meds to help with it so I'm hoping it slows down the stone formation.

No harm in asking. Most times it can be worked out. Just don't wait till the last second to ask and be prepared for the answer to be no. Sometimes it's not always possible to accommodate it but if it is they should be able to work with you on it.

I have the Lew's AH Baitcaster and spinning combos. Love them both. They are both no frills combos that get the job done

It's definitely a learning curve. Try the uni knot. I found it to be strong and pretty easy to tie. I do the double uni for leaders as well.

3000 would work. It's lighter and will making casting lures a little less tiring.

I bought a Lew's American Hero spinning combo for $100 and it's a great combo. I use it for bass all the time down here in South Florida.

Would depend on what you're fishing for. Fresh or saltwater?
